In Europe from the 17th to the 18th century we saw the rise of science and the use of reason as the supreme guidelines on how to aquire knowledge about the nature of things. Why did this movement seem to eventually die out and then give way to Romanticism, which was a rebellion against the values of the Enlightment and is even irrational (not saying that in a negative sense)?

There is a movement right now in the Western world to once again bring back the Enlightment (I'm thinking of secular humanism and similar schools of thought). Do you guys think, there would eventually be a backlash against it in the same way Romanticism was a backlash against the Enlightment?
