I am trying to wrap my head around the grand dispute among Alabama's B rate MMA scene. From where I stand, Ray Echols, replacing Skipp Hall as the newest scam artist in the state, has created quite a name for himself. Not a good name. But a name nonetheless. When he's not promoting bum fights between two grown men, he can be seen ringside as his barely teenage son gets battered about the face and head area by a similarly too young opponent. As for the Triad team of "fighters" nobody really knows where they get off taking stabs at Echols due to the fact that they don't really actually fight. They seem to simply "play" BJJ. Guys, if you are going to belittle a man for his redneck fighting style, at least be willing to step into a ring/cage yourselves. Because, while Echols may be a severe retard and overly-red redneck, he will at least fight your ass. Which is more than I can say for the lot of you. I don't even know where to start with this "Wolf Pack." All of the cool people have left this terrible forum. Spartan and Childersburg are the only legit gyms in the state. The rest of the MMA scene is an embarrassment to the state and the sport. Keep up the good work guys. As soon as you run the commission out of the state, everything will be back to normal.

We don't fight? I fought 2 months ago and am fighting again next month. Matt Ward has fought 3 times in the past year. Stephen Wilhite has fought half a dozen times in the past 2 years. Kent Waters is 3-0. Daniel O'Brien fought last year and is fighting again next month. John O'Brien has fought. We have 6 guys on a card next month. We've also had 2 guys win their division at the Alabama Golden Gloves. To say we simply "play" BJJ is dumb. We probably stay as busy or busier than the two schools you mentioned. We didn't fight illegally while the commission was being sorted out. Several guys went out of state to fight legally. Just because we don't fight on cards in your area doesn't mean we don't fight. And, just because we don't fight monthly without preparing properly doesn't mean we don't fight. We fight regularly, but it's gotta be on a legit, sanctioned card with legit prep time. By the way, we've BEGGED Ray to let out guys fight his guys on an MMA card. He won't do it. |

We at Triad Martial Arts like to know exactly who is libelously insulting or school? I'm John O'Brien, btw. I would like to know what your beg is with us. |

Triad is very active in mixed martial arts now, and very active in jiu jitsu tournaments as well. It sucks when the ones trying to do things the right way are the ones to get shit on

Only 2 legit gyms in the state of Alabama??? That is a funny troll job and it seems to be working. Dont forget about gyms like Port City MMA or Champions Freestyle and the list goes on. Auburn MMA has some tight guys with Keith Johnson fighting in July. He is 8-3 pro 170 who has wins over TUF vets Charlie Rader, Jeremiah Riggs and Nick Rossoborough. Good to see a thread gaining interest in the Alabama UG, and it has nothing to do with Skip Hall lol... |

In Gorrillas defense he has moved out of state and has not kept up as closely with Alabama mma scene. Triad guys have been staying busy and have been pretty successful at it as well. I know Adrian is at Champions now and they seem to be doing pretty well themselves. As for the guys out of town like, Port City and Auburn I am not too sure about as we don't hear too much up this way about them. I am just now finding the time, after being out for the last three years due to getting married, working full time at the fire dept and starting up a business on my off days, to get back to Spartan. I still say Chris Conolly is the best mma coach around. I was talking to some guys from Cali a few weeks ago who were raving about him being one of the best in the country. Putting two guys in the UFC backs that up. However, I know the guys at Triad have been working their butts off and have been impressively winning fights for the past 2-3 years since I have been gone. |

Curious thread. I see a more serious approach to training to compete in mma, not less, now that matches are no longer dark. I don't even know how the local gyms (Montgomery) have been judged not legit when we don't even have our first local show until the end of July. I've spent a good amount of time at both the schools here. I know that both programs have legitimate experienced instruction. I don't think either program is going to push (or allow, for that matter) anyone to compete in mma that isn't ready. |

How long have the Montgomery gyms been around? As far as the instruction, what kind of credentials do their coaches hold? As far as fighters being trained, how much fight experience do they have? Are they all ammy fighters or are there pro fighters training in these gyms? Are the fighters successful? The small handfull of gyms in central Alabama worth mentioning have a history of successful fighters and coaches. While you guys may not have been fighting because Alabama was not sanctioned, these few schools were sending fighters all over the country to fight. IE. Marcus Brimage from Spartan fitness fighting in the TUF house and currently 2-0 in the UFC. Guys from Champions have had success out in Las Vegas as far as I know and guys from Triad have had success as well. If you guys aren't even competing its pretty tough to claim that you come from a legitimate gym right now. However, if you guys do have a history of success on more than just a small local level, it's just that up here we may not know about it? |

I think you misunderstand the quandry. There hasn't been any local mma here in years. What was here previously was disturbing. You won't start to see many names in the area for some time, which is the point. If you did, you would be right in questioning the training. None of the trainers here, I honestly believe, would let an unprepared kid compete in mma, the hallmark of the programs that yall are complaining about. |

What's sad is Ray actually talks like he IS MMA in Alabama. He commonly refers to his organization as "The UFC of Alabama". He talks about how his shows are the best in the state and all of his "haters" are just jealous of his success. He brags about "making history" as if he's made history in a good way. He honestly believes these things. Unfortunately, there are people who believe him and kiss his butt and stroke his ego in hopes of being able to leech off of his imagined success. In reality, promoters like Echols/Clairday,etc. are why we needed a commission in the first place. They brag about what they are doing for MMA in this state, when they actually set it back years. Alabama MMA is the butt of many jokes, and they are the reason why. |

I would like to know what qualifies as something other than "playing" at BJJ as was said. Is it required to be PAID to be considered actual BJJ practitioners? I didn't think so since I feel people that truly love the sport would do it for nothing more than the sense of accomplishment, but maybe I'm not as educated as this poster as to what makes a legit gym with legit practitioners. I know Triad students go to lots of different tournaments and spend a lot of time getting ready for them. Too bad they didn't know the honor they felt when they won wasn't enough to make them legit in the eyes of some mystery posters on an MMA board. GG, if you want to know why anyone would take a stab at Echols, try driving past his new gas station/MMA gym. Not only is it now practically next door to Triad, the fruitcake has changed his logo from the original to one that is almost identical to Triads in shape which he has blown up and plastered over every window. I personally think he's trying to steal first time visitors looking for Triad's triangle sign. I bet you would be pissed too. |

The top gyms in Alabama are without a doubt Champions ,Spartan and i would probably put Triad . The coaches of these schools are all great ,. The people from Spartan says there coach is best ,the people from Champions say there coaches are best and the guys from Triad say there coaches are best. The important thing is these gyms are bringing notice to Alabama's mma scene. |

What about Headhunters, they have some very tough fighters there, always have. I believe Mike Taylor is one of the best coaches in the area for sure. I have a little place, but right now all the fighters around here want to train in their garage and not pay a legit coach to help them. So, all I can do is coach BJJ. I think that is the real danger to the sport in this state, is all the bum trainers and garage gyms that put themselves in fights with almost zero realistic training whatsoever. Also, guerrilla fitness in Montgomery has a Black Belt coaching there. And, lets not forget, lets NOT forget that Affliction short...in the city limits...that aint legal either. |

I am one of James' students. His fighter, Chase Horton just fought against Eric Anyders and subbed him with a wicked armbar in the 2nd! Yeah, those guys in Childersburg are super good and super nice! |

Congrats to Chase. People around here think Eric is the next big thing in mma. I don't see it. He got a lot of help from the judges in his win over the guy from hardcore gym a few months back. It pays to have a big name. For all I know he is a great guy, I just think the other kid got robbed |
