Yeah, I'm one. I've posted about it in the past, but like a good drunk, I occasionally ask the powers to be to deleted posting history. I'm a functional drunk, good job. friends, family don't know how bad it is, I play it off well. It doesn't 'affect my life' on the outside, but I'm pretty fucking miserable. I am single. I still get laid. I still have my job and work isn't affected, but this shit is fucking with my life. I go through phases when I cut back and only go out once every week or two, but that never lasts more than a month or so. My norm is 3-4 nights a week, 10 beers at a time. I never drink at home, only at the bar. I'm not a belligerent drunk, I just louder and more annoying at times, but I know I'm killing myself. I won't do AA. Please, give me some advice. I do want to stop. But in a lot of ways, life sucks balls. Its an easy escape. I know for those of you that dont get addicted to things, you dont get that 'have some will power you pussy' isnt the answer. Money doesn't buy happiness.

I would suggest councelling of some sort. Are you drinking due to some sort of hardship? I really don't know what to suggest..perhaps reading about it and learning why and going from there? I wish I could help and I wish you the best of luck. I think that education is key, but that is just my opinion. |

You need to find something else to do in those time slots. Bjj, rock climbing, yoga, soccer, bingo, whatever, you're probably drinking out of boredom?

Do not be smaller than your problem. Are you drinking to escape something? |

Topamax? The study involved 103 alcoholics over a three month period. Of the 103 heavy drinkers, 55 were given topiramate, while 48 were given a placebo. Both groups received counseling throughout the trial. The results of the study included: After 3 months, 13 out of the 55 in the topiramate group, or 24 percent, had abstained continuously for a month. Only two out of 48 in the placebo group, or 4 percent, had a month sober. In the topiramate group, 28 out of 55, or 50 percent, did not binge in the final month, compared with eight out of 48, or 16 percent, of those taking the placebo. Those taking the drug were nearly four times less likely to binge.Half of the topiramate group reported less craving for alcohol, compared to a 15 percent in the placebo group.

draculr - Switch away from beer at least. So many calories! This is 100% functional alcoholic thinking. It is saying "I'm going to drink anyways, but I don't want to be fat." |

I wont be much help, I'm pretty bad myself except I drink at home...every night, it's been awhile that I have not gone without. On a slow night I'll have a few 3-4, on a weekend or bad night I can polish off a 12 pack or a liter without blinking an eye. I'd like to at least get back to just drinking on the weekend |

A long time ago I gave up hard liquor and shots. I drink coors light bottle now. I don't drink draft cause it fucka with my stomach more than bottle. I'm overweight, but not obese. Clearly my drinking affects that as well, but I'm less concerned with weight than I am with general health. My liver I apparently ok, but I know health wise it's just a matter of time. I can't put any hardship on it to be honest. I could make a million excuses, but the reality is I have a good worry free life. Good parents. Good childhood, etc. Counseling? Maybe that would work. But I've never been sold on it... Is t that what the OG is for?

For perspective, I'm mid thirties. I probably drop $1000 at the bar a month. Obviously that money would be better spent, but I'm not in debt, I'm not struggling, yet. Eventually, I know my job will be affected, which I don't want to happen. As it stands, I can 'work from home' occasionally which I do if I have a ridiculous night out. I try not to abuse that ability, but fin myself doing it more often. Eventually, I will be called out on it.

I woke up in the hospital (again), looked down at my arms and chest and saw the IV's in my arms and probes stuck to my chest and just got angry. If someone gave me something to make me feel like that, ever again, I'll kill them. Sad part is that I did it to myself. That might in the hospital was what needed to happen. All the promises, tears, lost friends, all the times I fucked up, all the pain I caused, everything led to that point. I went through 6 months of treatment at the VA, did AA meetings and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (this year's NLP bullshit). All it did was strengthen my own resolve to never let that happen again. If you're the kind of person that can have a few drinks and stop, cool. If you can't even have one, then don't start. If you need alcohol to have friends, get pussy, deal with the sob story that your life has become...get some professional help or pray that something happens that forces a different perspective on drinking. Good luck. |

Bro, if you really want to stop, just stop. If you think you need help to stop, just try AA. Make your own opinion on it and don't listen to half of these people. I'm an atheist and it worked for me. If you must know, i envision my "higher power" as a better version of myself. It has helped me stay sober for the past 6 months. But as they say, different strokes for different folks.

Pundit, I can totally relate. I drink at home, but I drink daily. It's largely because it's routine and it passes the time. I have a good life, but I'm not excited by it so I just drink and pass the time. It's just so easy to pour a drink and then the night is pretty contented....I don't know how to do it differently |

SCRAPPER - I woke up in the hospital (again), looked down at my arms and chest and saw the IV's in my arms and probes stuck to my chest and just got angry. So did you go dry? How do you handle that with the fact that society generally drinks and drinking is absolutely correlated to higher salary? I want to go dry for extended period, but there are always reasons to go out for a drink |

There is a book calleed "Controlling Your Drinking" that is a pretty good tool for functional people who are concerned that they may need to keep drinking in check, but have not "hit bottom" as the AA folks would say. |

You won't do AA why? AA works for a lot of people, myself not included, though I haven completely given up on AA from having seen it work in positive ways for many intelligent people. Don't believe the bullshit you hear and read about it on the Internet. Most people have no idea what they're talking about, and like most things use out of context quotes and experiences to discredit it. Try AA, go to at least 20 different meetings, read a little, see for yourself.

I was pushed into Aa when I was 16 over some nonsense pot smoking. Did 90 in 90. I'm not discounting aa because of the Internet or some media dramatization of it. I'm discounting it because I find it to be a bunch of bullshit. I'm not discouraging anyone else for trying, clearly it helps a lot of people, but I can say with no reservation, that is not the answer for me.
