ReineDeVampire -sweatygooch - How are people even debating this. I'm no tech nerd but its clear that LED has a better picture quality. Go to a shop and look at them side by side. If you are only looking at around a 32" I'd say just go for your best deal. formerspook's numbers above are a great guideline to use IMO. I believe the only noticeable difference you will get is the longevity of the TV, as I've heard LEDs last longer. |

Anyone else thing they just fuck with the colors and contrast ratios in the stores on the cheaper TVs to get you to buy the nicer one?

Yeah, that's an old trick when they have a certain brand/model they want to move |

Plasma are still the way to go imo but they do use more power and get hot. LED and LCD look fake to me for some reason. |

Somewhat along the same topic, what exactly is it they do when calibrating your tv? I saw this advertised at best buy and figure is probably something I can do myself with the right resources.

Wrong, the stores make more money off of LED tv's because they are usually more expensive so the stores adjust the displays of all the displayed tv's so the ones they make better money off of will have a better picture. You can adjust the picture of whatever tv you get to be much sharper. I just got a 40" LCD that was a display model for $300 and i had to adjust all the settings and my picture quality is night and day from what it was when I got it home. I believe it was consumer reports that did a story on this, thats where I read about it.....while taking a shit. |

Granted, getting your tv settings just right and squeezing the lemon is actually hard, there are plenty of tech websites with obsessive/knowledgeable tv buffs that have worked out their favorites. It's not too hard to find one that works for you with some searching. It does make a world of difference |

Nader_Loves_SF_GIANTS -Have always thought this. When I bought my first LCD 5 years ago it looked fucking sweet and it still does. I know the new TV's hardware is "better" but your picture quality is dictated by your input signal and I feel like most newer TVs exceed your signal quality.sweatygooch - How are people even debating this. Gotta agree with Nader on this one. Look at the individual model specs, not the type at this point. The biggest difference is tuning the thing to work at its peak performance. My older plasma still looks best with its settings for gaming, and since I don't watch a lot of regular tv, it gets the most use. I probably won't upgrade until next Christmas when new consoles come out. |

It does make a world of difference and you are correct that for the most part you can get settings from CNet and other sites to find something that will work for you, but..some tv brands such as LG need the white balance corrected in the service menu---this makes a huge difference in picture quality. I personally am a nut for realistic colors and such vs over exaggerated and bled out colors. TV calibrating also ads shading for added depth and a more realistic picture. I personally had mine done by Chad B as it was thrown in as a promotion when I bought my tv through Cleveland Plasma...most people that see it think the picture on it is outstanding and I don't use the motion plus stuff. Of course, there are plenty of people that could care less as long as it has a picture, so it depends on the individual. |

A lot of the guys using projectors and big screens (over 65") are giving rave reviews about the Darbee Darblet because how it adds shading depth to improve picture quality. It works well on smaller sets too, but maybe not quite as dramatic---iirc 40" is the perfect screen size lcd because the pixels aren't spread too far. Check out some shots---you can slide to see a side by side. http://darbeevision.com/gallery |

I think paying Best Buy to adjust your new tv settings is a waste of money when you can go and find some good setups online. |

I don't disagree that there are some good setups online, but none of them deal with the service menu, and that is where the baseline is done. No two sets are alike, not to mention room conditions---again, all in how crazy an individual is about pq. |

All this 'flat screen' nonsense is just a fad, stick with tried and true CRT technology and save yourself a major headache. |

LED for the fact that it is the most efficient and gives off least amount of heat (traditional LCD and Plasma can get quite hot). |

I have an LED, picture is great. Blacks are very good as well. I use it mainly for movies and games. For games it's awesome! I have had people tell me the HD looks "fake" on movies, but i think they don't know great picture when they see it. ;) |

just bought a sony led lcd 46" 46ex645. The equivalent vizio actually had better black levels but I have had great luck with sony. My 32" trinatron xbr bravia finally quite turning on. Loved that tv. It was for my bedroom which is very dark so the ambient light sensor keeps the screen dimmer than normal and I get good black levels. One thing with the led edge lit or back lit tv's are they are thinner hence in my experience the tv speakers suck more than the normal lcd tv's. I have a onkyo receiver so it didn't bother me but fyi. No complaints from it other than I had to move back from the end of my bed 2ft from the tv to the head of my bed when playing cod or else i was looking left to right when turning lol |
