soundsdistilled - I have an LED, picture is great. Blacks are very good as well. I use it mainly for movies and games. For games it's awesome! I have had people tell me the HD looks "fake" on movies, but i think they don't know great picture when they see it. ;) Turn off the motion plus, true motion, or whatever your tv manufacturer calls it to take care of what is called "soap opera effect". A lot of peeps hate the way it looks for movies, but love it for sports. |

Alright, thanks for all the info. Definitely helpful. Are there any brands you think I should stay away from? Like it sounds like a good deal, but has a lower price because it's a shit brand? There are a lot I haven't even heard of, but then again I didn't know who Vizio was until about 2 years ago, so that doesn't necessarily mean anything... |

what the bestbuy guy told me: lcd around 10 years old led around 2 years old led will save you maybe around 100 dollars a year more. led will last around a year more with average use. that was about it. |

As someone said, not all LED TV's are created equal. Stay away from all edge lit LED tv's as they are complete junk on picture quality. The only exception to this rule would be the Sony HX-850. Full array back lit with local dimming sets are about twice as expensive but very good on PQ and deep blacks. Plasma still has burn in and image retention. It is a common falacy that people think these issues have been resolved. But plasmas will still produce a richer HD picture *in the dark*. If you like to watch movies and sports in a bright well lit envirnoment, plasmas will not perform well under these conditions. And forget about the new technologies coming into play like 4K and OLED. 4K sets are starting to be released but many estimates say any substantial content is at least 5 years away, probably much longer. OLED is not the holy grail everyone thought because preliminary reports say it's image retention problems are even worse than plasma. I personally prefer LED/LCD back lit with local dimming. I'm currently looking at the Sony 65" HX-950.

If you buy a plasma after reading and disregarding this thread, you have nobody else to blame. I have a back-lit LED I've had for over a year, and it still makes me come in my pants. LCD's are fine too, but you've gotta go with works best for what you want to do with it.

I think plasma is definitely the way to go. LCD/LED are more expensive, look cartoonish with their colors (although this can probably be mitigated through the settings) and look strange with motion. I'm not just talking about the Soap Opera effect either, I think because plasma refreshes at a much higher rate than the other TVs, you get much better motion. Think of the huge difference in cost as well. |

yusul - what the bestbuy guy told me: LEDs are more efficient but the power cost savings are not even remotely close to $100. I don't even think it costs $100 a year to run your average TV. |

People keep saying LCD vs. LED like they are two different animals. LED tv's *are* LCD. LED's are the light source for the LCD panels on the TV. The older LCD tv's used flourescent lamps as the light source(CCFL)

We will mainly use the TV for my Xbox 360 or to plug her Laptop into for movies/games. We do have cable TV but don't really watch it much.
We aren't worried about the electric bill since we live in national park employee housing we don't pay an electric bill, just 25 dollars a week for food and housing and we are good to go regardless of how much power, water, or anything else we use.
It seems so far that the back lit LED is the way to go.
We will probably get a PS3 pretty soon for the blueray player and some of the PS only games but I understand some new consoles are coming out so we'll see about that.
Regardless, this is a great thread with almost 2,500 hundred views so keep the advice coming guys, it's helping a lot more people than just my girl and I.
We will keep following it for sure and will likely be making our purchase sometime next week.
Thanks again OG, you guys are really the best source of information for damn near anything. |

Soup and Beer - It is a lot easier to make a reccomendation if you tell us the size TV you are looking for and the maximum you are willing to spend. 32" to 40" inches or so, no wall mounting.
Looking to spend between 300 - 500 dollars or so. |

I'm also not even sure you can get a plasma below 46" anymore. Your best option is probably an led backlit WITHOUT local dimming. They aren't quite as good as local dimming but close. We really just don't have the room for a TV much bigger than 40" or so and don't need the biggest, baddest thing on the market so your suggestion sounds pretty good and seems to be what the majority of the OG has been steering us towards so we'll likely go with something like that. |
