http://www.connectionrio.com -- Relson Gracie, son of Helio, shows some of the Connection Rio what the original Gracie jiu-jitsu is all about! These guys came to train BJJ in Rio, now they get a chance to train directly with one of the Gracie family at his academy in Leblon. |

Fish breathe water. Man breathes air. Relson breathes jiu-jitsu. |

John Frankl - 1. TMA John, While I don't care for many of the techniques in the SD curriculum, and often the basic by-rote method of presenting the techniques are kata-ish.....there is still value IMHO if people take the time to train them with resistance. I know from past experience Relson have people spar many of the techniques (as well as specific techniques of his VT especially the entries into throws, headlock techniques, striking/dealing with strikes, etc with gloves and headgear or with open hand strikes.....and who would ever forget his "light" elbow and heel kicks :( And he really does live these techniques!....I recall an incident with a visiting kickboxer who kept throwing harder and harder kicks, etc at Relson becase he questioned the validity of Relson's techniques. He basically told the guy go for it and throw his kicks. Eventually Relson got tired of it and......BOOM! He did one of the textbook techniques approriate for the specific kick, hammered an inside leg reap, mount and iirc....slapped him til he turned and dropped some light elbows on his neck. He adamantly requires his BBs to know and teach these techniques. just my two cent worth! |

He assaulted a visitor to his school during a no drill because he threw a kick that he was supposed to buy did it "too hard" as he was a kick boxer?

Koga - He assaulted a visitor to his school during a no drill because he threw a kick that he was supposed to buy did it "too hard" as he was a kick boxer? a guy comes into relson's school/seminar, questions his technique and becomes more and more aggressive with his kicks on a 60 year old and you say relson "assaulted" the visitor? are you joking? the guy asked for proof and relson proved the effectiveness of the technique. if he didn't want to know, he shouldn't have asked. if he didn't want to find out, he shouldn't have been throwing kicks. |

The longer you stay in martial arts the more you realise it all works.... I remember people laughing at the Karate front snap kick... Well as we all know Steven Segull invented this and showed it to Silva and Macheda ;) ...but really who ever thought it was a move that could be used to finish a guy like Randy or Belfort. All this self defence stuff has great value... imo. Its all about how you train it... |

Only one way to find out. Go to his seminar and invoke the gracie challenge. I dont recommend it. Relson is street homie. defiantly recommend checking out a seminar with him. The stories are worth the price of admission alone. and he taught some nice cross side setups and subs. really painful stuff to receive. He didnt get into the SD stuff till the sem. was over and only a few stayed to talk. kicking game from guard and stuff was cool. if you dont think you can learn form this man you are a lost soul. |

I wish Relson would do a book or dvd so we could see his methods of streetfighting/self-defense so we have a record of his style of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. |

biggator - he should be a red belt now right? how many redbelts still out doing seminars? He's getting the red belt next year when he turns 60. The only two red belts actively travelling and teaching seminars are Flavio Behring and Oswaldo Alves. Others still teach at their gyms.
