http://caj.ca/wp-content/uploads/2010/mediamag/awards2005/(Andrew%20Mitrovica)%20Saturday%20Night%20Magazine.htm IT'S EARLY SUNDAY MORNING in late January, and a gentle dusting of snow is falling on the birch trees and humble farmhouses that lead to Leamington, a sleepy town in southwestern Ontario, known for its apple orchards and bumper crops of tomatoes. The storefronts are dim as families drive through town on their way to church. They are dressed in their finest for the Holy Day — the day when several hundred Old Colony Mennonites gather for a solemn two-hour sermon, delivered in Low German. Inside the church, pine pews on the right are filled with men wearing western-style shirts and cowboy boots and holding well-worn bibles. On the other side of the pulpit, young women sway, hushing babies. Their black bonnets and pleated dresses, fashioned from patterns handed down for generations, reflect little of the profound change sweeping their community. As the lay minister finishes his sermon on the nature of truth, the congregation begins to sing a melancholy hymn, the same refrain Mennonites have sung for centuries; they ask the Lord for mercy, for his guidance and for forgiveness. But now they also plead for his help in healing their loved ones who have descended into a life of addiction and crime.

The younger Mennonites in the church have already witnessed more wickedness than their grandparents would have seen in a lifetime. Most in this congregation know there are men and women seated here this morning who are fresh from a drug run, possibly even hopped up on cocaine. Behind the thick pine doors leading to the elders’ chambers, a woman hides behind her prayer veil, weeping. She beseeches her pastor to intervene, to rescue her husband from the grip of the mobsters he now works for. Minutes later, the same pastor will hear the confessions of a reformed coke addict and drug smuggler. The penitent has come to repent in front of his community’s spiritual leader. And given the faith’s tradition of forgiveness, he will surely be absolved of his sins. This born-again Mennonite is the latest casualty of a well-organized and burgeoning criminal enterprise that generates millions of dollars in profits every year from drug smuggling, a network that spans Mexico, the U.S. and Canada. And the Canadian hub of this powerful Mennonite mob quietly thrives in a swath of small farming communities in southwestern Ontario, home to more than 50,000 Old Colony Mennonites.

Growing up, Detective Constable Mark Loop, lead investigator with the Leamington Police Service, thought that gangsters like those who inhabit the Mennonite mob existed only in dime-store novels or in big cities such as Detroit and Toronto — not in his home town, and certainly not as members of the Old Colony Mennonite faith, which is among the most conservative branches of one of Christianity’s most traditional sects. Loop was just a greenhorn, fresh out of the police academy, when he first discovered that a gang of Mennonites was operating a lucrative drug ring in Leamington. It was unthinkable. He knew his neighbours as hard-working, pious people who farmed the rich soil along the shores of Lake Ontario. But the more Loop dug, the more he understood how deeply the narcotics trade had infected the reclusive religious community. The street-savvy 40-year-old policeman has now been on the Mennonite beat for more than 13 years. In that time, he has watched the illicit organization grow, with a mixture of concern and incredulity. “Make no mistake,” Loop says bluntly, “these are wolves in sheep’s clothing.”

The proof is in the numbers. By the late 1990s, Old Colony Mennonites living in Ontario, Manitoba and throughout northern Mexico had cornered the market on the sale and distribution of marijuana in Canada, and were responsible for a staggering 20 per cent of all pot smuggled into the country. Police estimate that the cartel, with guile and ingenuity, was spiriting upwards of 750 kilograms of dope across the Canada-U.S. border every month. Today, by Loop’s count, 5,000 Mennonites have been conscripted into the drug trade in southwestern Ontario alone and their ranks swell steadily every year. But Loop’s efforts to stem the tide of Mennonite marijuana have been overtaken by other, more pressing worries. Recently, the syndicate has extended its tentacles and become more ruthless. Mennonites are now also heavily involved in the trafficking of cocaine and methamphetamine, forming alliances with biker gangs throughout Canada, including the notorious Hells Angels. Enemies are murdered, and police officers who get in the way are threatened with the same fate.

From AmishMafia.com I recommend reading the famous moments section of the site. In the 1950s as Italian mobsters moved into Vegas, they were at first unaware of an unseen force in the underworld was already making the arid desert their home. A handful of Amish settlers from the 1920s had sunk roots into the hard earth. Carving out an existence with meager farming techniques, quality wood products, freshly churned butter, and hand-made quilts. As other families of other religions and lifestyles began to stream into the valley, the Amish had to adapt in order to survive. The story is old. It all started with a few Amish kids doing petty theft. Mostly avoiding trouble with their wits and excellent work ethic. In 1928, Hezekiah Olson, at only 14 years of age, rose to top of the heap of a particular tough group of Amish kids on the southwest side of town. The neighborhood known as the Amish Ghetto, or as it was known then, ‘The AG’ (the site is where the MGM Grand is now located) was their domain. They began only within their confines of The AG. Controlling the flow of quilting materials. It was said that every 8 cents spent on thread, a penny would end up in Hezekiah’s pocket. In the early 30’s, The AG wasn’t enough for the dreams of power for Hezekiah. He and his crew, now numbering 8 hardened thugs, branched out into the surrounding communities with crimes rising in sophistication and daring. By 1935, all barn raisings went through Hezekiah in the entire Las Vegas valley. In those days, if you wanted a barn, you had to go through the Black Pitch Fork, as Hezekiah’s crew became known as. By the time Bugsy Seagal arrived, Hezekiah was out. He was replaced by Abraham Olson, Hezekiah’s cousin. Hezekiah’s reign ended on June 5, 1948, when he was killed in an accident while shoeing a horse. Abraham was whispered to have ‘arranged’ the accident, but nobody really knows for sure. Regardless, the Black Pitch Fork was quietly controlling Las Vegas when the more famous mobsters moved in. Even at their height, the Italians stayed exclusively on the strip. They dared not tread far away, or risk hearing the bone chilling clatter of hooves. Every Italian knew when they heard that sound they were about to get a pitchfork in their ass. Away from the strip, they were in Amish Mafia territory, and there were no guarantees for their safety. Famous mobster Tommy Lolito, an enforcer for the Priazatti family said this in an interview in 1968. “We kept to the strip. We were making thousands a day. Why would we worry about quilting supplies? I mean, what were those guys bringing down, $10 a day at best? (laughing).” But his laughing couldn’t hide the fear. The mob was interested in any penny they could make in those days. And if you were starting out, every source of income was an opportunity to make a name for youself. Yet, nobody dared make a move on any of the rackets dominated by the Amish. As Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, known in the 1970s as ‘the mouth piece for the mob’ as the attorney for many reputed mobsters once said; “I had no problem working for the Italians. Great bunch of guys once you got to know them. But those Amish Mafia guys, man, they didn’t mess around. I stayed clear of them. They meant business – they made the Italians look like choir boys.” Abraham Olson passed away in 1977 peacefully on his farm, just off the strip. A power vacuum then existed for a few years until eventually two leaders emerged to split the Amish Mafia into two groups, weakening their power. Moses Miller and Eli Jones today are still in control of their families. At times there was much tension between the two groups, but in the last decade a period of peace and cooperation has existed. The last of the old Amish neighborhoods is still standing, just off the strip. The pastoral scene belies the actual danger of the inhabitants. The contrast of the large casinos a block away from functioning farms is surprising to some visitors. Most probably ask themselves why the rich Casinos just don’t take over the farms. Not realizing the hundreds of missing casino executives and lawyers, who will never be found, tried to do that exact thing. The Amish Mafia is still present today, hidden quietly in the shadows. Their power and influence has decreased considerably along with economic changes to Las Vegas. Construction of wooden barns is rare these days. The sales of butter churns, quilting supplies, and buggies whips is also considerably less than 90 years ago. Excepting, of course, the recent boom in the sales of leather riding crops to the Sadomasochist crowd. But even today, if you do purchase some loom supplies in Las Vegas, a small percentage goes right into the pocket of some guy in the shadows with an old fashioned hat, a big beard, and dark sunglasses - The Amish Mafia.

Nader_Loves_SF_GIANTS -There have been a few articles about it, the would reenact scenes and add more "drama". There was a scene where one of the amsih has a "heart attack" while bailing hay that was made up, the show was also edited a lot to the point that I believe the colony is suing TLC. Watching he show I was like no way this isn't scripted, one s ene had this girl get a waitress job and she did the worst acting fall I have ever scene.Palmala Handerson - LOL TLC has to be trolling now. The other Amish show was proven to be fabricated so I'm assuming they just don't care anymore, people will watch it anyway. It was proven to be fabricated? When and how?

Well also, there's been pictures of them that have surfaced in "english" clothes before the show was ever filmed. In addition, the one guy, Jeremiah I think, had been out of the amish community since he was 18. There was another picture that surfaced of Rebecca, Abe and the baby before the show was filmed. |

I sold some acreage to an Amish guy that very much gave me that feeling. Foremost, they are set up hierarchically anyway, so there's that. A father has as many sons as he can and they work for him and give him money up until they get to a certain age. This guy had 5 sons, all working for him, living on his compound and kicking money up. As I sat on his front porch a buggy came up to his house and he got off the porch with a concerned look. They started speaking Dutch in a low tone to one another. The buggy driver hands him a small note. He carefully inspects it. What was odd right here, and I shit you not, is that the note was rolled like in a scroll. Hehhe. He reads it, nods, and rolls it back up returning to the porch. 15 mins or so later the man comes back, they exchange words in Dutch and he leaves. Not much was said, a very quick exchange. When he comes back onto the porch one of his sons comes out, and he gets dismissed with a mere look. Now that you mention this amish mafia, it all makes sense now! |
