I just bought an Insignia 46" LED 1080p 120hz tv. upgraded from a LG 32" LCD 1080p 60hz. loved my LG, but when watching the Walking Dead on this new TV it looks like there's a bunch of zombies in my room. TV's incredible. paid just over $600 for it. Phone Post

If you are in a dark room with limited lighting/reflections I would go with a plasma as they still have the darkest blacks and the brightest whites. Phone Post

I keep hearing plasmas really aren't the best way to go for gaming and that will be the primary use for it.

And I don't really have a dark man cave to put something like that in.

Picture a college like dorm room in the middle of Death Valley and that's what we live in.

Dreamer... Backlit led in that case. The newer plasma screens are fine with games.... The older ones were more susceptible to burn in than the new ones are. Phone Post

Jacobmccrmck -  Anyone else thing they just fuck with the colors and contrast ratios in the stores on the cheaper TVs to get you to buy the nicer one? Phone Post

Not necessarilly, but when I was buying my last TV I read that each manufacturer has their own contrast scale, so you can't really compare them by the numbers, you have to do a side-by-side test to tell which one has the better contrast ration.

Panasonic Plasmas are still the best TVs out there not that the Pioneer Kuros are long gone. I bought a used Kuro in a classified ad for 700 bucks and it is much better than most TVs out in the market, I'm very happy. Panasonic grabbed the pioneer technology from pioneer but it's taking a little longer to trickle down to their TVs but it's getting there. Sharp also is using the pioneer technology but there TV they came out with is like 6K Phone Post

Sharp bought out Pioneer. 200 of their engineers and designers were told by Sharp to come up with the best picture quality LED tv they can make while disregarding cost. They came up with the Elite brand tv's 3 years later. The 70" retails for $8,000 but can be had today for about $5200. Phone Post

Plasma DOES NOT have burn in and the screen life is 30,000hrs +

Positives- best picture quality for games/cinema. Black levels are natural not like LED's which bump to contrast to super high settings to give the appearance of black.

Cons- use more power and are generally heavier

I bought a 60" LG plasma recently. It has a thin bezel and is only 1.5" thick. Fantastic picture quality and Halo 4 looks ridiculous on it.

...and the heat thing. I don't know WTF that is all about. Unless you are sitting 3 ft away from TV how can you feel heat? Christ it's not like a fireplace.

This being said get what you want. But, know that the vast majority of home theater review sites say go w/ plasma.

Actually yea, image retention and screen burn in still occur. Some are more suceptible than others though. You can go to the Panasonic VT-50 thread on the AVS forums and see for yourself. That is considered the best plasma on the market right now. And plasma's do throw off a lot of heat if you have it set on the highest setting (vivid). Almost too hot to keep your hand on it more than a couple of seconds. Phone Post

I have never ever seen burn-in and have played some gains for hours on end. But like I said get what you want. Before you get a LED tv make sure you watch a movie on it and see if you can live w/ the "soap opera" effect.

...and please don't watch a plasma on "vivd" that is wayyy too bright. Find an online forum and calibrate it yourself. It looks so much better. If you're going to use any preset look for "cool" or "cinema" mode.

So I am a huge electronics guy and have been for years as well as worked for an electronics store for 5 years when I was younger. Also a huge gamer. Here is a breakdown for you.

Plasma - more life like colors and picture, also have a higher refresh rate of around 600hz. 3D is also better on a plasma for that reason. Even though they dont really have a true number like LEDs.

Plasmas are heavier, darker, more power consumption. Cheaper in price for larger screen size.

LED - brighter screen and colors and better still imaging, lighter and less power consumption.

Have bad screen blur when high speed motion is on screen. More expensive for smaller sizes.

Also I own 2 plasmas which are used for gaming 51" and 64" and love them. Also have and 82" DLP which is also amazing for movies and gaming.

Ask me any questions as I tried to keep it simple. Phone Post

i got a 40 inch lcd samsung, and it's amazing. it's 1080 and i adjusted the setting. caveat: i don't know who has the highest rated led/lcd, but i'd look at refresh rate and contrast ratios.

there is not the same risk of plasma burn in led/lcd. i think for space and price the led or even an lcd are the way to go for your price range and i don't think 40 inch plasma's are made; i was just on best buy and futureshop. don't forget to factor in weight and thickness if you ever want to move it.

I read up a lot on the AVS forums. I'm well aware that probabaly 75% of the people hate the "soap opera effect". I personally love a touch of it and keep it on for my 120" projector. To me at least, it gives a 3D effect without having to put up with clunky glasses and a dimmed image. I have seen some extreme examples of the SOE though where it makes the movie look like a documentary which is not good.

Part of the problem though in comparing Plasma to LED is the only basis one can use it looking at them under bright lights at a Best Buy or other box store. And plenty on the VT-50 thread on the AVS forum actually love the tv but are giving it up because they are getting too much image retention from something as simple as a History Channel logo. That being said, I do like the image that some plasmas can produce but I don't usually watch tv in a dark room environment so it's not as optimal for me. Phone Post

Planning on getting a new tv in the next few days and I like getting the best quality for the price. So I know that an LED is just a LCD with LED lighting, but I was wondering, in your opinions, if the LED is worth the extra money or if the regular LCD is just as good?

Plasma is the best.

The Panasonic VT50 series is the best on the market.

The Panasonic ST50 is the best value series on the market.

I would go w/ one of those two.
