UFC President Dana White appeared recently on an ESPN chat, and covered a wide variety of topics, including the possibility of a union in MMA.

If there was an ASSOCIATION similar to the Screen Actor's Guild, big stars like GSP and Silva would still make millions, just like Tom Cruise or Robert DeNiro make millions per film. The rights of fighters regarding contracts, licensing revenue and other areas would be protected with the power of all UFC fighters under contract. Hopefully people can see how collective bargaining can benefit the biggest stars of the organization, while preserving the sport for years to come. |

As things stand, Zuffa has done a great job of dividing the top fighters by making an association sound like they would be subsidizing the 3/3 undercard fighters. Really, the underpayment of the UFC's biggest stars allowed Zuffa to buy Strikeforce and eliminate a threat to their PPV stranglehold that would have forced the big stars--Silva, GSP, etc-- to get more money out of fear of them leaving. Someone is getting a free lunch at the expense of the UFC's fighters, and its not the undercard fighters. |

The biggest pro to a union would be to see fighters being treated like humans instead of $heep

Zuffa is too smart for it. They're not going to destroy the sport, the global market they created, by turning it in to broken dysfunctional boxing. Unions exist for their own sake, and they destroy industry. This wouldn't be any kind of an exception. |

HolyAvengerP5 - lol, it worked out for hostess And GM, and our embarrassingly broken government-education system, and the mighty American steel industry, and pro-boxing, and pretty much everything they get their hands on. They want to do for the UFC, what they did to Detroit. Compared to Wal Mart? The biggest hirer in the nation. Where ANYBODY has a shot. A company that promotes from within, where a kid chasing shopping carts can move high up in to the corporate ladder with hard work and dedication... |

Ryann Von Doom - The golden boys of zuffa will kill a union, just like hogan did to the prowrestling union talks. The top guys who are taken care of well by zuffa will axe it and fuck the guys who need the protection of it. And by "protection" you mean, a dead company and a smashed sport and everybody out of a job. The lowest rung UFC fighter makes far more than the average boxer. Not even just the entry level boxers. The bottom of the totum-pole UFC fighters make a lot more than the average boxer. UFC fighters have no union, boxers have one that helped crush and ruin their sport for them. So, what are you talking about? |

D'Souza is spot on. Acting isn't a team sport, and those at the very top benefit by far the most. |

It's great to see people can see unions for what they are, I was expecting a load of socialist dogma on this thread. Kudos guys. |

Yes, very true, they have been miserable for the team sport athletes, actors, writers. . . I'm sure all of those people wish they would just disappear--so much so, that they NEVER leave them--yet are freely able too. Dana's comment is also quite amusing--the MLBPA, NFLPA, NHLPA, SAG, and others do not negotiate individual contracts on behalf of the athlete, actor, etc. Dana knows this. . .

will never happen because the talent comes from too many different parts of the world which means different cultures, different aims and avge lifespans for careers are very short in MMA. It would be highly improbable to put together. if you cant do it in the wwe where guys are there forever and who pretty much share the same culture it will never happen in the UFC. revenue share will be around 28% (similar to the wwe). want fighters to make more, you gotta figure out how zuffa can increase revenue.

Macedawgg - There's a reason why employees don't unionize in right-to-work states. The same reason those states and those industries are doing so much better through the recession than in other states. This is why big-government union thugs want to force card-check on people. So they can intimidate employees who don't cooperate. If unions were so wonderful, they wouldn't need corrupt and disgusting tools like that. They would allow people a secret ballot. And, there is no comparison between team sports and MMA. Tennis players have no union. Neither do golfers. Boxers do, and their sport is dead as a result. And, SAG? Seriously? Talk about apples and oranges. Actors in California are unionized because everything in the Peoples' Republic of California is unionized. That's why the state is circling the toilet bowl. And that's why Hollywood doesn't even make movies anymore. They outsource production to right-to-work states or to Canada to dodge the taxes and regulations and red tape. Pitiful. Michael Moore makes his shit documentaries condemning capitalism and he doesn't even use union labor to do it. Embarrassing. Zuffa is doing just fine without letting the corrupt thugs get their foot in the door and wreck everything like they did for Boxing. |

Anyone who is pro union for the UFC will change their minds when a lockout because Joe Nobody isn't getting "fair pay" according to the head of the union and then we miss out on seeing fights from main eventers because of someone else's special interest. I don't think Joe Nobody should be underpaid, but his contract dispute would stop the entire business from operating because they'd call for a strike. |

his contract dispute would stop the entire business from operating because they'd call for a strike. The last thing any MMA fighter wants to do is avoid fighting. Fights mean getting paid, exposure, moving up the rankings and making historic defenses. Fighters have a short shelf-life from 20-30 years. Some guys can last till 40+ like Dan Henderson or Randy Couture, but they are a small minority. There's no MMA fighter who would ever participate in a prolonged strike because they could be losing their prime year of ability. And while there are strikes or lockouts in other sports/areas like NFL, NFL, SAG, things have always been resolved and its always been back to business. I wouldn't be comparing the prospect of an MMA union to auto workers or Hostess unions anymore than I'd be comparing Canada's socialism to the former Soviet Union. |
