If he loves mixed martial arts and wants to pursue it as a career who are you or I to be the judge of whether or not he should be, why not let his skills be the reason we judge this man. So if I rape a girl, or murder someone, then it's all good after I tell kids how I feel bad because I got busted? " It isn’t often that the booking of an undercard fight can cause controversy, but Bellator recently found itself in hot water when they booked Dan McGuane on the undercard of this week’s Bellator 81. Bellator booked a fight between McGuane and 3-0 Light-Heavyweight Mike Mucitelli, ignoring the fact that Dan McGuane was convicted of manslaughter in 2005. No big deal, it was just self-defense, right? Unfortunately, no. Not even close. Recently, a website BanDanMcGuane.com popped up after the webmaster had learned that Bellator had signed the fighter. According to reports, McGuane and his twin brother beat an eighteen year old, one hundred and fifty-five pound man named Kelly Proctor to death after Dan’s brother thought he heard Kelly say something. I wish I were exaggerating, but I’m not. After the jump, the grisly details, courtesy of the website (they’ve since been removed): At the time of the incident that led to his death, the victim was five feet, eight inches tall and weighed approximately 155 pounds. Each defendant was approximately six feet, four inches tall and weighed nearly 200 pounds. On the evening of Saturday, July 2, 2005, the victim and his girlfriend, Jayme Rotondi, watched part of the town of Ayer’s annual Independence Day fireworks at Pirone Park, but left early to avoid the crowds at the end of the display. As they left the park, the victim and Rotondi passed a group of at least six people walking toward the park. The group consisted of the defendants, Greg Shultz, an exchange student from Denmark, who was approximately the same size as the defendants, Brandi Livingston, Mary Papalucas and Sara Jones. Rotondi noticed one of the defendants staring at her; she smiled, then heard someone laugh. The victim stopped and asked Rotondi, “What are they laughing at?” Peter left the group and walked back toward the victim and asked, “Did you say something? Do you want me to beat your ass in front of your girl?” Papalucas positioned herself between Peter and the victim and said to Peter, “Don’t do this, let’s go.” At that point, Peter reached over Papalucas’s head and, with an open hand, slapped the victim across the face, knocking from his mouth a straw on which he had been chewing. After Peter slapped the victim, Daniel joined in the attack. Both defendants punched the victim several times. The victim began crawling, trying to escape the assault. The fight gradually moved from the street to the curb, then onto the sidewalk, where the defendants forced the victim back up against a sport utility vehicle (SUV). Rotondi, in an attempt to break up the fight, jumped onto Daniel’s back and scratched him, tearing his blue polo shirt. She was pulled off Daniel by Papalucas, who also tried unsuccessfully to break up the fight. One of the defendants shoved Papalucas and Rotondi aside, then Daniel kicked the victim in the chest. The victim fell to the ground and ended up under the SUV. The defendants walked away, leaving the victim under the SUV. As he left the scene, Peter said, “What do you have to say now?” The victim remained under the SUV, lying on his chest, with blood coming from his nose. His breathing was labored. Papalucas told the victim it was okay to come out from under the SUV, but he was not responsive. She and some of the defendants’ friends, who remained at the scene, pulled the victim from under the SUV. The victim was unconscious and his eyes were open but rolled back in his head." This piece of shit was with 5 buddies, way bigger than the other guy, and gang beat him to death, after KOing him and forcing him against an SUV to take the beating that would end his life. This guy and every poster who defends him should fucking die. |

^^ He didn't even throw a punch, he got slapped in front of his girlfriend, and immidiately jumped and MURDERED by punches. The world is overpopulated, we don't need a guy who's playing nice because he already beat someone half his size with 0% of his training to death with his equally large and trained brother. |

After some crimes, you pay your debt to society; in others, the punishment society gave you was woefully less than the crime committed. |

Making it to the NFL didn't change a thing either. WVU vs Syracuse in the bowl game give me a fukin break .Yawn!!!!!

He may have paid his debt to society in a legal sense, But mma is a sport. And sport is supported and paid for by the fans. So obviously the fans voted him off the island. And for good reason I think. And the sports management isnt going to die on any hill in support of an unheard of fighter like this guy when there's so many talented people who are "fighting" for the same spot.

I read that article - If it was supposed to redeem him, it failed him miserably. I read it not knowing a thing about him - and now I'm glad he's banned. Sounds like a cunt. |

There are other ways to make a living, might do him some good to explore those options and enjoy it. Its a better option than the kid who died got. |

AssAssassin -Exactly. Where is his victims second chance at life?kwnel2178 - I have mixed feelings about this story, certainly I can empathise with the family of the victim, but at the same time I believe in redemption. I the man has served his sentence and seems remorseful, then maybe he should be given a chance.

alkysmurf - I hate it when society is so ridiculous, a judge and jury trial decided this man was guilty of a crime and he served what in their eyes weighed with evidence to be a fair sentence. He should be allowed to do whatever the fuck he wants. As consumers, we have the right to decide what we want to watch, and what we don't want to watch. The market decided that it didn't want to watch somebody who murdered another person fight for money on TV. Stop acting like he is still in prison. He isn't. He is free to put food on his table. He is free to get whatever job he would like to, as long is it isn't on our TV. Is it really that hard to find work that isn't fighting? How many people in this world are professional fighters, and actually able to support themselves on that income? Not many. Unless you are saying that the only way he can make money is violence. |

Chris27 -Wu Massacre - ok and he isnt guilty of any of those 3 things, if he was i would completely agree, im actually a rare mix of extremely separated beliefs and think anyone guilty of those 3 crimes should receive a painful unpleasant death penalty unless there is a damn good reason they should get prison instead Completely agree with this. The line "the victim tried to crawl away." pretty much sums it up. Two larger men beat a guy to death after instigating the situation. Fucking disgusting and pathetic. You don't just get to serve your time and join society with no consequences. The value of a life can't be determined by any legal system, and as far as I'm concerned this man will always be a murderer and a piece of trash. |

reading this thread and you can easily see why the us has the worlds largest prison system, and the permanent in and out cycle with recidivism rates unmatched in the rest of the world. Maybe if prison was used less to cage animals and more to educate them on how to avoid the issues that got them there we could see more people finding their place as productive members of society. Its obvious they have missed the lessons in right and wrong, or just made poor decisions, some of these guys can be rehabilitated, for the betterment of society. Some of the posts in this thread could have been written by the Taliban. America is a country where we are supposed to be Innocent until proven guilty by a judge/jury of our peers. The judge and jury decide, based on ALL the evidence presented what a just punishment is.

I think you may have misunderstood. This is not a pending case. There is no doubt about his guilt. From the article: "felony conviction for involuntary manslaughter and the five years he'd spent in prison for it." |

I am pleased by the general tone of the thread. Dan McGuane and his brother are clearly a couple of psychos who beat someone to death. Dan McGuane seems devoid of meaningful remorse, and he clearly does not understand the damage he did. As a fight fan, I don't want to watch McGuane, and I don't want to watch an event where he is on the card. |

No, we have the most overpopulated criminal system because has decided that its their place to legislate down to minutia, because our legal system is created, legislated and executed by the same lawyers who make their living off of it, because people go to jail for smoking pot, for defending themselves from injustice. Murder is a mortal crime, the most serious crime and deserves the most serious punishment, not a slap on the wrist and assurance that "everything will be ok when you get out in a few years." He should have no such comfort, nobody should be able to say to themself "i can kill this kid, it'll suck for a few years but then i'll get out and get on tv!!! |

Bellator signed him even knowing about the murder to me that is wrong, if you choose to look at the circumstances or not this fighter shows tendencies to violence. MMA fighters have to show restraint at times, my concern would be what if his opponent said something or did something to piss him off would he go to far lose control he showed he couldn't control himself already why take the risk a fight organizations job should be to try to the best of their ability to protect all their fighters Bellator made a bad choice to sign him in the first place..IMO

I told this story on another McGuane thread: Before the Kelly Proctor tragedy happened, the McGuane brothers went to a local MMA gym and were "slamming" people during a grappling class so they got green lit. My buddy grappled with each of them and roughed them up enough that they never went back to that MMA school. Supposedly, Jorge Rivera was there and was going to do the green lighting, but my friend did it instead. |

I was speaking in generalities, not specifically this case. In general we Americans have a punitive view towards criminals rather than a rehabilitation orientated system. Specifically in this case the guy was charged with involuntarily manslaughter, and served the term that a judge/jury who know ALL the details of the case decided was just. I have no qualms with stronger sentences or even life/death sentences. But since he has served his sentence its my opinion that he should be treated as a free man. I really can't wrap my head around the guys on here with the beliefs that its only black or white, the majority of the world operates in the grey. Seriously many posts sound like Islamic fundamentalists. They can't grasp that its not as simple as if dude walked up and shot the guy, there are obviously many extenuating circumstances in this and every individual specific case.
