Between Manny getting KO'd, Rua and BJ getting beat there are several obvious things that are showing up. MMA is relatively new sport and some of the early 2000 athletes are proving the fact that there is a life span on careers. When an athlete preps for each fight, the countless blows to the head, the depletion of testosterone over time, that a fighter has about 10 years to compete. That isn't a hard fact its just an observation. People like GSP dont get into wars with alot of blows to the head so he will have a long life span. The fact that the fans and the UFC love wars and fighters love wars, how many wars do you have in you. The only thing that drags these people back into the ring is money and sometimes ego. Looking at Rory vs BJ, Rory had the expolosiveness that BJ lost but ahd in the beginning. He is fresh. in 5-7 years, he will be old. Couture started later in life and often avoided striking wars but he had a span of about 10 years before it ends. Just an observation that nature is cruel but it in no way diminishes what fighters / legends accomplished in their day, its just that time moves on. |

Alot of people don't know but I've read about the pituitary gland and boxing. The gland is basically in your lower forhead area. Doctors have surmised but dont know for sure that repeated blows to the head can mess with the production of testosterone. Its just a theory but MMA fightes will prove to be a Scientists/Aging doctors dream. |

True that. It's why the likes of Wanderlei doesn't have much left, and why Fedor faded badly in the end despite both of them being 36, a year younger than Anderson, who seems to be getting better and better. W and F had wars and all time great scraps where they both took amazing beatings but prevailed. Anderson Silva really doesn't get hit at all, which has given him much longevity. |

zealot66 - Did anyone else see this on Nat. Geographic or some other medical show a few years back? They covered head injuries in boxing, hockey, etc, and why Pop Warner is likely a bad idea. Age might not be as MUCH of an issue if the injuries are spaced out, and there are not as many- guys may be able to fight longer in later years if there is more recovery time. Also if they start later (Couture, Hendo) |

Wrex - True that. They should also limit the hard sparring in the gyms. "Sergio Martinez and his trainer stated that they usually don't do more than 60 rds of sparring for any fight." |

I was pondering the thought of a masters league. would at least make for some more balanced fights. |

rather than just war, i'd say span: the total amount of wars they get into over a period of time. when they start fighting. |
