If JMM has lived in Manny's shadow, has Donaire as well? Is this perfect timing for him to take the mantle? Donair is ranked #5 P4P by the ring right now and has been for a while but casual fans probably have never heard of him. |

Barry_BondsMVP -Wasa-B -Barry_BondsMVP - Did you see Donaire's last fight aginst Nishioka? Was supposed to be a great win for Donaire? Japanese boxers are even more less known, no? |

Arce is tough & relentless but he lacks the defense and punching power to beat Donaire.

Is Donaire too small to get mainstream limelight? Pac didnt get it until he started moving up, Oscar, etc. |

Wasa, its not about his size as much as marketing him and / or his opponents. He seems to be a good guy, good husband, etc but not overly charismatic. Conversely, most of the guys his size are foreigners who are unknown or hard to market here for various reasons.

Michael Carbajal was smaller than Nonito but was more charismatic. He was a star for awhile.

I'm a Nonito fan, but he is in the twilight of his career, he won't be "handed the mantle" so to speak. I was really impressed with Farenas last night. It was very obvious that he was brought to get beat down and lose, but he definitely had other plans. He gave the "world class", next big thing, 50 cent managed fighter Gamboa all he could handle. Could've been a huge spoiler last night

Wasa-B - Is Donaire too small to get mainstream limelight? Pac didnt get it until he started moving up, Oscar, etc. This is mostly true. Oscar put Mayweather and Pacman over. Its really tough for the little guys to hit megastar status. Tapia and a few others broke out for a fight or two like in his showdown vs Danny Romero but its tough to hold the public attention at Bantamweight.

Conversely, most of the guys his size are foreigners who are unknown or hard to market here for various reasons. Wouldnt it be both? Has a 120/130 guy ever made the mainstream? And fighting unknown foreigners only adds to the problem i guess. Like the last guy he beat, Nishioka, was supposed to be a legit champ/top guy and a great win for Nonito's career but Nishioka is even less known...and i read that Nishioka is one of the few japanese boxers willing to travel for fights. |

Like I said, Carbajal was a mainstream star. Kennedy McKinney, Junior Jones, Kevin Kelly and Mark Johnson flirted with mainstream acceptance and stardom. Jeff Chandler back a few years before them. Thing is there aren't a whole lot of Americans that size, so we tend to ignore the smaller divisions.
