Here's a guy who just might be my best pick yet for a pro wrestler that was active in 1993 and who would have stood a legitimate chance at winning the 1st UFC tournament: Dennis Koslowski. Who is Dennis Koslowski, and what is his pro wreslting background? He's an American amateur wrestling great that's originally from South Dakota (he now resides in Minnesota/like Brock Lesnar, going for SD to MN) who won a bronze medal in Greco Roman Wrestling at the 1988 Olympics, and won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics. His pro wrestling experience was in the UWFi in Japan which was a Japanese promotion which did shoot style worked matches. I'm not aware of Dennis Koslowski having done any legitimate MMA matches, so this should make him eligible for the criteria set forth here. Dennis Koslowski would have been 34 years old when the first UFC happened in 1993, so he should have still been in his prime, especially since he had won a silver medal at the Olympics the year before. He was listed as being 6' tall and 220 lbs. This guy was kind of like Kurt Angle, before Kurt Angle, only he never did American pro wrestling. Here's a breakdown of his amateur wrestling credentials: "As a Doland High wrestler, Koslowski never made it to the state finals. That didn't stop him from reaching the pinnacle in his sport, as he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame last year. Koslowski was the first U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler to win two Olympic medals, winning a silver medal in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain, and a bronze in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea, both in the 220-pound weight class. He was the first U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler to medal at an Olympics that wasn't marred by boycott. In 1992 in Barcelona, Koslowski lost in the finals in overtime to world champion Hector Millian of Cuba; he beat defending champion Andrzej Wronski of Poland in his opening match. In 1988 in Seoul, Koslowski was joined on the U.S. team by twin brother Duane, who placed eighth at heavyweight. After the '88 Games, Dennis gave up wrestling but stayed close to the sport as the Greco-Roman coach of the U.S. national team in 1989-90. Believing he could beat most of the wrestlers he coached, he came out of retirement and made the 1992 team. He was an Olympic team alternate in 1984. Koslowski competed in the world championships five times. He lost in overtime in the finals in 1987; he was sixth in 1983 and ?85 and seventh in '86 and '91. He was a four-time World Cup silver medalist and he won seven USA Wrestling Greco-Roman national titles. At Minnesota-Morris, he was a three-time All-American and a two-time NCAA Division III national champion. He also was a three-time all-conference offensive lineman in football. After graduating from Morris in 1982, he stayed in Minnesota for chiropractic school and began wrestling Greco-Roman, a style in which he'd never before competed. He won his first USA Wrestling national title in 1983. At Doland, he placed third twice in the state Class B tournament. Koslowski is a Twin Cities chiropractor. Since 1990, he has owned Koslowski Chiropractic, which has been the team chiropractor of the Minnesota Vikings since 2007 (he travels with the team)." |

As said by numerous people, Bad News Brown was a genuine Judoka, and a fantastic one at that. One person that may have been missed out on due to their future MMA career is Dan Severn. Severn did Pro-Wrestling before entering MMA, I think he would have had a decent chance at beating Royce back in UFC 1. |

theshooter - "The Undertaker maybe" I've never watched pro wrestling, but I saw The Undertaker at a UFC(43 I think) talking to Tim Sylvia. Tim was taller than him. Somebody was going to take their picture and The Undertaker leaned in and whispered something to Tim. They both laughed and the undertaker stood on his toes for the picture. Closest comparison I could find.

Guys, Slow down a bit. Remember, Shamrock was "versed" in submissions being from Pancrase/Submission Hybrid Wrestling, and he gave his neck to Royce on a silver platter. Yes, Royce could have been steamrolled by the Steiners, etc., but the positioning (or lack there of from the competition), etc at that time was a huge factor for Royce. Not saying one of the badass wrestlers from the early '90s couldn't have given him a run, but Servern was also a pretty badass wrestler and fell into a triangle over time, without having the knowledge of even the basics of finshing holds... Just my $0.02... |

If the Steve Williams' of the world could avoid hitting the canvas and kept it standing then, a a bunch of guys could have beaten Royce. But, could they then have known to not stand with Pat Smith, jimmerson and Gordeau? They would have needed to execute the proper game plan in four matches, and, if i was to bet, i would guess that they would have tried to take Royce down the way Severn did in ufc 4. They would probably instinctivally take him down because to beat smith, gordeau or jimmerson they would have had to take them down to win. They would have been in the habit of doing that, most likely. Once it got there, they would probably have been fucked. |

CGJitsu-Dan Severn was never a great fighter, he was a great wrestler..Severn did well in MMA because of his wrestling but he never struck me as a very dangerous fighter because of his lack of subs and striking..watch his fight against Royce at ufc 4, he doesnt throw a single punch i dont think...now you grab a very strong, athletic guy with a great amateur wrestling background and you give him some killer instinct(a guy that will ground and pound from the top) and he could beat royce at ufc 1.. also interesting is could Jimmerson or Gordeau just KO these big wrestlers with ease had it stayed standing?i know they were technically much better strikers but that doesnt mean a 250 pound plus wrestlers couldnt land a bomb or just bullrush them into the fence..... |

Ok, I'll bite, none of them, The knowledge simply wasn't there at the time. A guy with good trad wrestling wouldn't have even known enough to use it to stay standing. |
