Looking at picking up a .45 pistol next week. I like glocks and 1911s it will be used as a home defense for myself and a recreational gun. Any opinions on model of glock or a 1911 in the 600 to 1000 dollar range?

No carry in immediate future, no competing. i am getting it for a home defense/ want a fun, good quality, reliable gun to go out and shoot at the range with. Obvious 1911s are kimber, colt, and springfield. I have heard about quality issues with all the aboves new models. Glocks i just dont know what models are the best for what i need.

bluejays - No carry in immediate future, no competing. i am getting it for a home defense/ want a fun, good quality, reliable gun to go out and shoot at the range with. my father in law has a smith and wesson tac model 1911. shoots like a dream. im not sure but i think the cadillac version of it is about 1200 but you can get a regular old one for about 750? glocks are super nice, but im partial to 1911s. for a .45 id go 1911 and get a .40 caliber glock...just my personal preference though. |

You can't go wrong with a Colt or a Springer. Ruger just came out with a 1911. If I were buying new that's what I'd get. |

Glock, 1911 in an antiquated relic They are great guns but more of a cultural icon than anything else.

Akston - Glock, 1911 in an antiquated relicThere is a reason that the 1911 platform has lasted for over a hundred years. And it's not because its old. I own 2 1911's and previously owned a glock. I'd recommend shooting a couple different guns if you can, see what feels good to you. Some people don't like the feel of Glocks. The xd's are also a nice gun.

I have a model 22 Glock and it's a fine weapon. Little bulky to conceal carry. The model 27 is better for an every day around town carry.

unclephilly -Sgt 606 - After much research, I have decided on the HK mentioned. i haven't shot a lot of hand guns (maybe 10 at most) but the one I shot best with was the HK 45, I was amazed by how balanced the gun was and the recoil seemed tame compared to some of the other smaller caliber weapons I shot. If I had the loot, that would be my first choice. How much did it run you and did you get new or used? |

I own a glock 30. If you want it for home defense you can go with that or the Glock 21. If you want to carry it stay with the 30. The 30 shoots very soft and is not snappy. The muzzle doesnt really flip much. |

UGCTT_improved my self of steam - what size barrel on your 1911? You open carry, owb, or iwb? 5" government model. IWB behind strong-side hip. Some people feel that the Commander form factor is nearly the ideal form factor for a self defense handgun, and I have to say that they are probably right. Go handle a Colt Combat Commander XSE in a gun store. I chalange you not to whip out your credit card then & there. |
