The extended upper deck wax boxes were 19.99 at Costco and sold for 85.00. I had my dad drive me all over Az to get those boxes. Limited to 10 per customer, I had every family member I knew in line. LOL. the memories indeed.

I no longer have my store, but I still have a few buddies of those who are still in the game. 1 of which runs 2 auctions held monthly. Every now and then, something interesting comes in and I will go, but most of the time, it's people like us unloading their crap on sports hoarders. It's common to see 10,000 card boxes go for a buck or 2. Not exactly Sotheby's.

Did you get your cards whole sale from the distributor? I always wondered what kind of price dealers get since my dealer only marks up like 20-50 from what I could order online.. Don't see how they can stay in business. Phone Post

Do you guys figure that investing in vintage cards would be a good idea since collectibles always take a hit in a down economy? I assume you won't get a card of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, etc this cheap again once the economy eventually recovers (and it always does).

If you want to strictly invest in sports cards, vintage is ALWAYS the way to go.. If you just want to invest, i would go buy some gold and silver personally.. or even land. Phone Post

there are different prices for how big a dealer you are. the bottom fell out in the 90s due to mass production. then the gimmicks came in...( inserts, autos, relics, etc).

Then friggin Ebay came around and totally changed the hobby for the good if you are a buyer, for the bad if you are a seller. Card shops began to also sell comics and action figures to try and help with the decline.

Eventually, comic/card shops began to close by the masses, card shows were cut down greatly, ppl realized why should they pay for rent, electric, etc. for their store when they can sell online.

Shops stay afloat now anyway they can. selling instore and online. even preselling products aswell. commission selling, have their own card shows.

The main ptoblem for the shops is the bigger wholesaler shops out there that must buy massive quantities of the low end products to get the high end products. thus they will offer it online at prices to the average customer that a small shop pays the same price. Phone Post

You weren't kidding about that Mark McGwire card. I just had a look on EBay:

His minor league card which was probably a limited print less than $9 shipped and graded http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-Chong-Modesto-As-Mark-McGwire-Correct-Spelling-PSA-9-mint-rookie-card-/121043944416?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item1c2ec803e0

A near mint '85 Topps card $4 shipped http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-MARK-MCGWIRE-USA-Rookie-Card-20-BV-Topps-401-/281044107492?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item416f88c0e4 if I didn't have a billion cards I didn't want I would buy this.

A graded near mint '85 Topps $18 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-Topps-401-Mark-McGwire-USA-Olympic-RC-Beckett-Graded-BGS-8-ROOKIE-CARD-/121044630433?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item1c2ed27ba1

I guess my cards aren't worth shit. In the 90's these cards were worth more. I have some odd ball cards though. I have some limited edition weird shit and I have some old cards mixed in, but the majority of my collection is probably trash, if not all of it.

^If you were a kid back then, then you didnt care about monetary value. you collected them because you liked the ball players. How would you know that they made a boatload of them? let alone the other collectors out there? not your fault. Its the greedy card manufacturers that figured they had basically a never ending, easy supply of printing money. (in the form of a sports card that is) because ppl wanted it in droves.

Back then you could walk into a Sams Club and buy a box of cards for $5. let alone a whole pallet at your disposal. They also sealed the packs in wax and shady ppl would open the packs, pull out the (Hot priced) cards at the time and take an iron to reheat the wax and reseal the packs. then sell it to some shlub who didnt know better.

Are there some good cards to be had in the 80s and 90s? yes there are. but they are few and far between. 84' had Mattingly, Strawberry, Carter in it, but no really big money unless you come across Fleer Update. Mattingly.. 85' Puckett, Clemens.. 86' mainly the update/traded sets with Barry Bonds XRC.. 87' Barry Bonds (cards dropped after roids). 88' dogshit. 89' griffey jr/ randy johnson.. mainly griffey UD... 90' Frank Thomas Topps NNO ( no name on front) very rare early issue dnt bother lookn to see if you have one. Sammy Sosa (cards dropped after the roids) Leaf. Phone Post

My biggest memory in cards...

I'm at a card show and 1991 Basketball Upper Deck just came out. A dealer is buying all Dikembi Mutombo 1991 UD's for $10 each on the spot! "They will be worth hundreds some day!"

lol, ah, the memories...

I literally spent all of my money on baseball cards as a kid. Oh well, all we can do is learn from our mistakes.

I spent almost every dollar I made with my paper route on sports cards.

I can't give you an exact figure, but lets just say when it comes time to cash in on my Glen "Big Dog" Robinson, and Penny Hardaway rookie cards, I'll be sitting on some pretty sweet coin.

Is there a price book that gives prices on sealed full boxes of cards? My Dad has dozens of unopened boxes and asked me a couple of months ago to see if I could off them for him.

PS my Bob Feller story. My dad worked in pro baseball. He knew just about everybody. My first glove was given to me by Vida Blue. Later on, we were at a baseball card show where Feller was signing. He and my dad were both fans of a football player from my dad's university, Iowa. The guy's name was Nile Kinnick. The stadium is named after him. Feller said something about how he has looked for the 56 Kinnick card and could never find 1. My dad had 2 and gave Feller 1. He said thanks. I left my dad's side and bought a ball and asked Feller to sign it. He said, "30 bucks, kid".

lol Feller was a real life badass, threw 100mph and fought in wars Phone Post

Michael Jordan's 1986 Fleer RC is the ONLY card to retain its value and popularity in cards! Even Wayne Gretzky's RC's are much less...

Still collect but I dont bother opening boxes really.

At $150+ a box, you are just better off eliminating the risk and buying the card(s) you want.

Its all about low serial #d and autographed cards now.

Yup I buy most of my cards loose... Big gamble buying a $200 box and your best hit is a Brian Quick auto relic (had this happen to me 3 times this year). Phone Post

Ouch @ brian quick. I collect mostly baseball but have a couple hockey, football, and MMA cards as well.

Its so hit or miss now.

I remember that you could get a good card if you just bought a box.

Now you have case breakers who still lose 40% because the cards are shit.

Also dont get me started on the autograph stickers.

Ouch at the # of redemptions!

You can call them and they will probably send replacements but even then they will rip you off in terms of value.

I really hate that I like collecting because from Topps/Panini/UD right down the industry is filled with fucking scumbags!
