I'm 47, and I don't train as often as I used to. 14 years in and a purple who hangs with all our purples half my age when I do roll. Since my problem is shape, I try to stall in my guard and prevent them from passing until they get tired enough to mount an attack. Just be smart with leg-locks. |

Master Bater - Serious question for the older guys (and girls) I'm 54- been traneing a LONG time. I only started BJJ when I was 44, but I started Karate at 13, boxed, MT, lifted and did a bunch of sports, football etc. I still trane, but mostly stand up these days Like you ( genetics)I don't look my age. Here's all I can say. OTC trt replacements with some other supps is the only thing that has worked to help me with recovery and flexability. Once I put my pride aside and came to grips with the effects of time and old injuries, I opened my mind to looking for help. I have a whole shit list of stuff I take, but I'm not fanatical and there is nothing 'special' ( no gear)on the list. I don't inhale them like skittles, I just slip them in during the course of my day and at night I load up so I can keep them in my system while I sleep. I take ; T-Bombs-creatine-Nitrious Oxide-Tribulus Terretris extract-DAA ( amino acid )-fish oil-Gaba- 5-HTP (Hydroxtrytophan) Phenebut (mood enhancer-caution)B-vitamins and some Boron citrate. I know it sounds like a lot of shit, but it's really not that complicated or bothersome. It's nice to have some pep in my step and it's cool that I can still throw down with the young guys. Here's a pic-not for nothing, but I will be 55 this October.Or you can click on my SN profile on here, the pic below the one with me standing next to Whitehead, the pic below Good luck, old man! https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/25650_1380450042101_7131727_n.jpg |

On a side note, I started to trane mma after I saw Handy fight about 10 years ago, He's still my hero. When I walked into that Gracie gym,he was my inspiration. I figured if that old goat could do it, so could I. |

Master Bater - thats a great post Blazing Knees, and i must say you do look great. where do you trane now? and have you been with the same gym since you started? MB- thx brother. I started with a gentleman named Jon Burke at a Gracie sanctioned gym-Jon traveled with Royce in Japan and was personally Black belted by Royce-he's a great guy and awesome instructor-Shaq tranes there. When Jon first opened, he is/was very traditional and only did Gi. He's since transitioned into full mma. Anyone close to central FL should def go there. I just wanted to scrap, I wasn't interested in belts, so I left after about 1 1/2 yrs. I went to a Gracie Barra school in town and did work, time went by and I wound up at American Top Team and did MT, submission grappling and did the full blown mma under former UFC and current Bellator figher Ben Saunders ( another great guy) I tore hip flexor slightly, took almost a year off and am currently at a small school here in town I'm still mostly doing stand up- I still roll but not as much as I used to. I'm not very techinical and I still have bad habits from wrestling and tend to power out and into subs instead of using my head.If I was belt oriented I prob would be better on the ground, but like I said, I just like to compete and yes, I roll hard ( 75-90%) which I just can't help. It's a matter of having too much pride. but I still have most of my hand speed and reflexes and every now and then I gotta break out the old man strength and put some whippersnapper in his place. I get beat up pretty good sometimes, but I don't let them know if I can help it.My skin has gotten 'thin' and I scrape and bruise easily these days (it sucks) The comaradarie is awesome-lol they call me 'pops' Check out those testo supps, they work. |

p.s. I have tons of respect for Jon Burke for anyone who is in central fl-his gym is called " 6 levels' now instead of Gracie Orlando, in case anyone is interested in training under a real Royce BB |

BZ - I took T-Bomb II on a couple deployments and the results I got were just as good if not better than some of the kids who were ordering gear from eurobolics.com and some other places. You're right about them. |

if you can, try to stay off the HGH and hoids. unless you are a baby, and the rest of your body is growing at a similar rate, anything that makes your head size grow by a third can lead to neck and back problems. chiropractors are getting paid big offa cats with moonface. |

I know it sounds cliche, but its just mind over matter. I think the worst thing is allowing yourself to slow down. Some slow down is natural, but stay as consistent and busy as you can. |

I didn't read all the way thru so sorry if something like this has been posted. As we age and engage in combat sports our body creates a lot of overactive/underactive issues in regards to joints/muscle activity. Basically over use injuries that your body automatically adjusts to protect. Find a good Corrective Exercise specialist and get an assessment incuding a range of motion assessment. You may be surprised. They will be able to give you specific exercises and warm ups to correct any issues. I would highly recommend looking into dynamic warm ups and foam rolls before you train. Then stick with the static stretching after training. Problem with us older guys is we don't know when to just say "ok, I need to adjust" most of us are leaders in our gym and etc. it's hard to just do the simple things that no one wants to do to stay healthy to train. People that have been in combat sports/MA as long as the guys posting have all kinds of issues that come from the repeated beatings we give our body for years and decades.

You're right about them. I admit I did a couple of cycles of pure test a couple years ago-it felt great. The young guys might not notice as much of a diff, but I sure did. The T-bombs taks about a week to kick in-you can also supp DAA + Tettrous extract with them. Cheap and effective. |

I came really close to doing HGH> I have a young buddy who has a great connection and he's a beast as well. In the end I decided I couldn't stick my belly even once, much less 5 times a week @ 300 a month. I just resigned myself to being old. BTW- what is 'moonface' is that a by product of hgh use? |

Wishing everyone at OFTT - (Old Farts Top Team) a safe, fun night and may you all have a very happy new year. starting 2013 as you mean to go on, by being positive about your life, your future and your training. Set yourself the targets that you KNOW you can reach, and set off on that journey with the determination to reach them with time to spare. the pride it gives you to set a goal and make it a reality, especially when your peak may be just behind you, is hard to explain to people that have not achieved this - don't be one of those people who don't know how it feels.. be an achiever - train like you mean it. everyone on this thread has gained my utmost respect and renewed my belief in an even longer MA career. many thanks to a top bunch of blokes :) "Live like you mean it" Master Bater ~ B.K. Well, I stopped training when I was in so much constant pain that I couldn't even play with my kids anymore. I'm not a professional, nor will I ever be, don't make any money in martial arts, wasn't enjoying it anymore so for me, it was time to hang it up. I know some will call me a quitter, but shit man, if you're not enjoying something any longer that's supposed to be your hobby, why keep doing it? |

i doubt anyone will call you a quitter. sounds like you are doing well and focusing on things you enjoy. if more people did that i think we'd see a lot less bad stories on the news. |

Dont let anyone make you feel bad about prioritizing recovery. Quality sleep is very very underated. Tell your wife children, and grandchildren you love them, train safely in '2013'. cheers |
