Eisenberg - Its really sad what people consider a perfect movie these days. This was a 6.5/10 at best.
Name a movie you liked better this year? Just curious.. Phone Post

I have not see that many movies this year, but naming one isnt hard. I liked The Dark Knight Rises better.

I wanted to like Django, and some parts of the movie were really good. But there were too many flaws to make it good in my opinion, certainly not a masterpiece.
While I wouldn't go so far to say Django is a 6.5/10, but I agree that it was far from a perfect movie. However, I much preferred it to TDKR, which was riddled with flaws, but that's a matter of opinion. Personally, I loved 7 psychopaths, very underrated and is a must see if you haven't watched it yet. I watched it again today. Pretty rare for me to see a movie twice in the theater.

Good movie, I liked it but there are problems.

Christopher Waltz, great performance.

Leonardo DiCaprio , great performance.

Jamie Foxx, ok performance and I'm still trying to figure out if it's not great because of his performance or because of the way the character is written. I certainly can't picture Will Smith in the roll but I do wonder what Denzel could have done with it.

Kerry Washington, ok performance. The role wasn't written to let her be much more than a damsel needing saving, which I thought would have been a bit better with her being a stronger character that didn't flinch and scream every time someone touched her.

Samuel Jackson, good performance in being a conniving Uncle Tom and again the theater really responded when he got his comeuppance.

I was disappointed with the buildup of the two having to search for the Brittle brothers in every single plantation only to find them at the first one they came to. It seemed to be an underdeveloped part of the story and in general the whole script was much more linear than what one can usually expect from a Tarantino movie. It didn't have all the little interesting twist and side stories that Tarantino has provided to the viewer in movies past.

I thought the scene with the KKK posse was funny but suffered from some clumsy editing. They storm over the hillside, where a rider falls from his horse and the riderless horse is prominent in the resulting shots. Just weird. Then they arrive on the plain at the meadow and the scene abruptly cuts to the hilarious hillside dialogue scene with the klansman sounding like a bunch of faggoty housewives. Then it abruptly cuts to them riding around the wagon in the meadow again. The continuity and scenery are butchered, whether on purpose or why I have no idea but the whole series of scenes didn't flow very well.

The female masked tracker is also a distraction. First we see her and the closeup on her face right before the dog scene and later in the tracker shed looking at the stereograph right before Django burst in. With the shots centering on her but zero followup character development it took me out of the movie for a moment trying to figure out the who and why and was just an overall distraction. Maybe something more will come out in a directors cut release down the line.

The scenes with Tarantino himself seemed a little off. Like he was uncomfortable being there. It was noticeable that the scenes he was in were about the only ones in the movie where the term nigger wasn't used and I wonder if it was by design and because of the criticism he's previously received by Spike Lee, et al.

Overall I though the movie was very entertaining but far from 'Perfect". I'd recommend it and I'll see it again, hopefully with lots of bonus content, when it comes out on Blueray.

Thoughtful post.

Out of curiosity, what movie would you consider a 9 or 10?

"Out of curiosity, what movie would you consider a 9 or 10?"

Movies that would be a 9 or 10 for me are movies that I'll watch and enjoy again and again. Movies like

Reservoir Dogs,
Apocalypto
We Were Soldiers
Lonesome Dove
Gladiator
Sling Blade
Seven
Open Range
Forest Gump
Training Day

But there are also movies that I think are great, I really enjoy, that make some sort of impact on me but I dont have an interest in viewing repeatedly. Movies like

Shindlers List
The Girl Next Door
Memento
Amistad

I loved it. It was Tarantino's best movie. I personally think Kerry Washington had the strongest performance in that movie even though it was among the smallest.

I agree with you 100%. Other than the fact I thought Foxx was a big letdown for the movie and it should have been Denzel or Idris Elba with that role. Phone Post

PeteyWheatstraw - I would check it out, but Jamie Foxx is so damn shitty. Why couldn't it be like Keith David or somebody from The Wire?

I was worried about having to watch Jamie Foxx as well, I can't put my finger on it, but I usually hate that guy. He was stone cold awesome in this, no foolin'.

I thought it was really good, not one of his best. A lot of problems with the editing and flow of the story. The QT cameo at the end was very distracting.

i dont know...maybe because im not a cinofile but those little technical details dont really bother me...like i dont care if in one scene a person is wearing a watch on his left hand and then in antoher scene its on his right...i definitely noticed that the editing was weird on the KKK flashback scene but it bothered me for like 1 second and i moved on...

i focus more on the story, acting and dialogue...

Im not much of one for picking apart minutia of a movie either . However, on a thread whos premise is that the movie was "perfect" i thought the comments were apropos.

That and liking Tarintino's movies as I do I pay closer attention to them, watching in closer detail looking for the hidden gems.

Good movie. A bit different in some aspects than some of his other films . More linear storytelling . Would recommend . Phone Post
