You often hear about guys getting their assew handed to them when showing up to chanllenge Rorion but with the exception of a few guys who publically said it happened there just are few guys who have been around here that admit to it.

I am sure it happened but with over 400 guys and everyone talking about it, it just seems that there are few people willing to admit it.

Of course there are tons of guys who say that Rorion ducked them...go figure.

This particularly story might be BS, but seriously, if the Gracies want to market GJJ as a superior self-defense art, the Gracie Challenge should have allways been anything goes.

There's a video of a teenage Ryron destroying a bigger, older guy, but it was not even close to being a real self-defense situation.

What I want to see is (and I know this isn't realistic) a GJJ practioner defending against a big, strong guy trying full-on strikes, eye gouges, biting, groin attacks, etc.

No disrespect to the Gracies (I think their martial art is great and they appear to be excellent instructors), but the Gracie Challenge is fluff marketing at the end of the day.

"No disrespect to the Gracies (I think their martial art is great and they appear to be excellent instructors), but the Gracie Challenge is fluff marketing at the end of the day"

I witnessed several challenge matches live...dudes would get taken down and either beat down or submitted...no fluff marketing...rorion knew that if the challengers did not know the grappling game they had little chance

the fights were "no rules" and I witnessed dudes going for the KO via nut shot...the gracie fighter Mauricio Zingano was NOT wearing a cup and the challenger was wearing a hard cup...the two locked up and exchanged knees to the nut area until mauricio connected and then the dude quit

I can remember Rorion saying something along the lines of..."you can go for the eyes/nuts/etc, but the payback is going to be much worse"

^^ This.

the way i heard was that the challenger had the choice of "with striking - or without striking"

it's clear that the challenge between royce gracie vs jason delucia clearly had striking.. as did many others

For some reason this reminds me of the whole Joe Louis ducking Helio spin...

Someone can only "duck" if they believe the challenge is legit and the challenger is credible

Like Cain isn't sucking Tyson Fury even if he doesn't answer the challenge

I'm a huge fan of the Gracie's btw, but that Joe Louis spin always kind of rubbed me the wrong way... Phone Post

I can pronounce Rorion correctly too. I even know where Torrance is. I can also name a bunch of other legitimate shit. Does that mean I too can claim Rorion ducked me? Rickson ducked me too (pronounced Hickson so you know it's true)!

If you want to know if Rorion even knows anything of what this guy 'says', message UG member by the name of '12'. He has been around the Academy for many years. His son is a black belt there (there aren't to many of them fr Torrance). He can ask Rorion.

Unless of course he see's this thread first.

i know a guy about 50 (friends with john lober) claims he did a gracie challenge/dojo storm of sorts.

said gracies came to his kung fu school, challenged him and he said yes.  next week he said bunch of minivans and trucks pull up filled with mats, set up mats in the parking lot and they faught no rules.  Said he held his own and did well stand up and all of a sudden he said it went to the ground and he woke up having pissed himself, choked out cold.

only reason i believe this one is because the guys says he got his ass kicked and pissed himself; so why would you make yourself look bad.  Who knows though...millions of people claim gracie challenge and i'm sure like kirik said, maybe a lil truth to them all.

ttt for poster few above with the story of the nut shot.  history of martial arts in so cal is fascinating.

Well, he had to be in his 50's when this 'happened'. If the Glover part checks out it could've been that he proposed some kind of BS match that Rorian laughed off. Old man calls it a duck.

A British Boxer recently proposed a fight with Cain Velasquez, Cain won't take it but you can bet that Boxer will be saying that he ducked him when he gets to be 60.

Your maths isn't that great. Phone Post

the legend of the gracie challenge is the beauty of it.  Not knowing what really happened and all the stories and claims.  Like bigfoot or lockness monster.  I think not knowing and always having the debates is most of the fun.  Also keeps the legend alive.  It's like passing down history over the camp fire from elders to newer generation.

He's a con man, pro con men get their stories perfect and have no holes. He's obviously good at it. Cross-reference his name with databases or try to get a hold of Glover by some means, maybe twitter, to see if that last part checks out.

As far as the $100k challenge goes, was there ever really a $100k challenge? From every bit of information that came out, it sounds like it was just a $100k bet between Rorion and Benny Urquidez that rumor stems from. Is there any substantial evidence that anyone who could win won $100k?

(Edit: I see the post above me cleared that up. Both parties placed $100k on the line for the challenge.)

To your second point, I can say I trained with Gerard Gordeau, it doesn't make it true.

In summation, unless this guy was actually Benny Urquidez, he was lying. Even if he said he was Benny Urquidez, he's still likely lying.

Myth Busted.

I had read in Jiu Jitsu Magazine, a couple months back, that the challenge was a real thing. I am thinking it was an interview with Pedro Sauer. He was saying that everyone would back down once they found out they had to put $10,000 on the line to win the 100k. Phone Post

Animal Mother -  He said that the rules were something like no punching in the face or eye gouging. He called bullshit on any rules whatsoever, and Rorion told them if he was so tough he should still be able to win anyway. After he expressed he only cared about winning the $100,000 challenge and didn't give a shit about being considered a tough guy, Rorion dicktucked.

Now this is a tall tale indeed, but ponder this. This man is in his early 60's, pronounced Rorion correctly, and knew he was in Torrance. He claimed to have been training Muay Thai for years, but also named a legit French MT fighter who he said he's trained with and knew about Lumpanee stadium. Here's the final kicker, he says he was training Glover Texiera before his first fight in CT, told him he wasn't ready, and Glover lost. This last part all checks out.

What say you UG, fact or fiction? I'm leaning towards fact, this old man is legit. Phone Post

Someone needs to contact Texteira like he said via twitter or his team that should settle the issue fast.
