A friend from work knows I train and told me how his brother starteda Gracie Garage training group thing and was wondering if I'd be interested in going and letting them know what I think ( I'm a purple belt with 10 yrs experience grappling). There were 5 guys all of whom had no formal training in grappling other than the videos and from rolling with each other. |

I have to say I was super impressed. I watched some the videos which are very well done and these guys have been able to put it into action. I'm no world beater by anymeans but these guys were easily as good as an average blue belt and all from they're garage training. They all had solid basics and seemed to know what they were doing. The only crit I have is becasue they have no instructor if they get stuck they don't know how fix it or know tech's not taught on the video's, but overall I can see this becoming a big success as BJJ grows and people don't want to pay the huge prices some schools are charging. Just my 2 cents if anyone is interested. |

When I started training BJJ in high school I would come home, set mats up in the garage and teach all my friends what I learned. We would roll and box. People from school would think we were stupid "wanna be" fighters. The truth is most of my broke ass friends loved mma but couldn't afford to go to a real gym. So we made do with what we had. The best part is the resident tough guys at school (football player, wrestlers, trouble makers) would here about us getting together to "train" and laugh at us. We were a small group of no bodies. Didn't get invited to parties, girls didnt talk to us. we spent our friday nights training in my garage and playing video games. So when all the badasses at school heard about us boxing and doing jiu jitsu they would laugh and tell us how they'd kick the shit out of us or how the fight would be 10 seconds long etc etc. So as we trained more and our confidence grew we started saying "Fine, come over after school, lets put some gloves on and fight." I didn't like confrontation so Id be very polite about it. "come over, we'll fight with gloves so no one gets hurt to bad or in trouble, We'll see who's better and shake hands after". When the fat kid at school says something like that to a jock after the jock just got done talking shit they're usually inclined to accept your challenge. So they would come over. Bring their friends to cheer them on, we'd all fight and my friends and I would work these guys over, usually with relative ease. By the end of High School my reputation had made a complete 180. It became a common thing for the same guys who used to pick on me to ask if they could come train in my garage. It was crazy. So whenever I here about people getting together to roll or spar at a house and not at a legit gym I think its a good thing. The common analogy I use is not everyone can afford or wants to play basketball on a local league, so there's nothing wrong with getting together and playing with the hoop hanging above you garage door. If your training at Blackhouse or in your Mom's basement, if your happy with what your doing what does it matter? |
