Everyone has every right to speak their mind, including military veterans. Being a miltary veteran is admirable in it's bravery and service but doesn't grant any sort of greater validity for what is being expressed if done by one.

Anyways, if you're a fighter you should do whatever you want and deal with the consequences because being a fighter means nothing beyond the subjectivity of however you feel comfortable defining it. If someone "takes care" of you under the assumption that you are obligated to show loyalty, that isn't an act of kindness it's investing in dependence for personal benefit.
