beallator on spike has the potential to blossom into something that actually rivals the ufc with the fight shows and the reality show...not right now, but somettime in the future if they play it smartly...this is different than the other bigger competitiors of the ufc in the past...i do not see this as a flash in the pan... |

They're not counterprogramming, but they are making sure no one knows anything or posts anything relevant about bellator on the UG. |

I guess you don't have fuel. They are running UFC stuff all night every night. Constant counter programming going on. |

Few reasons First the UFC does have Fuel but that isnt in enough homes, FX is really the only equal to Spike. FX is a real network, before the UFC could do whatever they wanted on Spike, they cant on FX. Thurs at 10 tonight is Archer, that show I believe does 2 million viewers, they arent gonna run a repeat of a UFC show instead of that. So they dont have the network to really counter Spike on Thurs. I also dont think they really are threatened by Bellator right now, we have to see what kind of ratings they do. If they are doing 1-1.5 mill viewers a week and plan to move to PPV the UFC will be threatened by that. If Bellator sticks to Thurs and does 700k viewers a week and does little 5k arena shows they arent gonna care. If Bellator builds an audience, does over a mill viewers a week on Spike and looks to move to PPV thats when the UFC would counter. If Bellator did a PPV with like Mo/Page, Eddie/Chandler, Daley, maybe Curran/Pitbull vs Sandro or Askren vs Koreshkov, if they did a card like that the UFC would probably counter. They would have to do the PPV on a Sat so the UFC would counter with a live Fox card or a PPV on the same night. If they had the freedom to run a replay of a UFC event tonight on FX they would do it but they dont have that freedom on FX and Fuel hardly anyone has. |

Because the UFC wasn't the one doing the counterprogramming,
SpikeTV was.
The only time the UFC went out of their way to counter-program a rival was when they slapped together a free show to run opposite of Affliction. The rest of the time it happened it was just SpikeTV running stuff from their UFC library. Spike even counter-programmed other Zuffa properties (WEC, Strikeforce). |

Simple, Bellator doesn't have the names to draw the audience. Sure, the UG knows them but average joe has no clue who they are. Just because its mma doesn't mean casual fans will watch, free or not. Especially when network television shows are "counter programming" for them. Those casuals aren't going to miss their favorite Thursday night prime time show for Bellator.

UFC done goofed. Bellator has the ability to slowly build a fan base if it cotinues to do what its doing. If UFC tries to counter program when they reach competitor status, it will be too late at that point.

Orcus Knows MMA Better Than Goku -
Because they cant. FX doesnt give a flying fuck about bellator or spike... they certainly wont prgram around it. Why on earth would they bump their award winning programming to counter program spike when they wont even do it to give the UFC better placement.
And Fuel isnt in enough homes for counter programming to be effective. FS1 is launching this summer which is available in 80 million homes... Once this launches Zuffa will have the ability to counter program spike. They will likely counter program the bellator reality show with an international tuf (brazil, aus, or whatever) and they will likely counter program bellator live events with UFC ppv replays. zuffa has to just shave off 10 to 20% of their viewers to decimate them. With fs1 and their every growing content library they will be able to do just that. the only time the UFC will counter program bellator with a free live event is if bellator puts on a ppv. |

Orcus Knows MMA Better Than Goku - It seems like they'll have a long tenure as a steady B-League just like TNA is to the WWE. However, as long as they aren't on PPV (and they're not even close to that yet), I doubt Dana White cares nearly as much about Bellator as he did about Affliction when they were actively competing for fans' money. Right now the main thing they're competing for is talent, and the UFC has nearly all the top talent out there. People who say the UFC has "99.9%" or "99%" of the elite talent out there are really bad at math, but the difference between what the UFC has and a true monopoly is pretty minimal. Bellator has around two marquee fighters above Lightweight, one of whom is MMA's answer to ambien, and they're on the verge of losing arguably their biggest star in Eddie Alvarez. Realistically, unless they did some really high-end poaching, it would take like a decade of steady growth for them to be considered even a marginal threat to the UFC, and if they start becoming a threat for real the UFC will have plenty of opportunity to fuck with them then. |
