I've been on a low dose for almost 9 years. Started taking it for anxiety early in my career due to extreme work stress. Rather than get my shit straight through diet and exercise I took a shortcut and it worked. In the meantime I've completely revamped my health and its time to get off this poison. Unfortunately the withdrawal from Lexapro is apparently really fucking awful. I talked to my doc (he was pretty useless) and did quite a bit of research on my own about the best way to minimize the withdrawal symptoms. Here's the plan; Cut to 5mg (from 10) for 7 days. Then cut to 2.5 for 7 days. Then take 2.5 every other day for 7 days. Cold turkey. I'm posting here to receive both positive and negative reinforcement. I will update occasionally with symptoms and how it's going. Feel free to call me a faggot etc. it will all keep me from growing a (second) vagina and giving in to staying on it. Thanks in advance for calling me a faggot. |

Good luck man! I don't envy you. Sounds like you got the right attitude to get this done. I know you're gonna do it. |

Good luck bro! Did it give you really bad sexual side effects the whole time? I started Lexapro but got off after a month bc I couldn't bust a nut.

Brother, I've been on crazy meds for a couple of decades. I was on a different SSRI and went through the withdrawal last year. It was hell like most people can't imagine. I know what you're going through. First, I would never call you a faggot or talk down to you. It's hard and I don't think admitting that it's hard means you have a second vagina. In this case, you really DO DESERVE A MEDAL JUST FOR SHOWING UP TODAY. It's true. Don't be hard on yourself; sometimes this sort of thing is so hard that you have to give yourself credit for small victories. Second, why rush this? I wanted to get off the meds last year so badly that I think I went too fast and it wasn't necessary. You have the rest of your life to do this, so don't make it harder than it has to be. Get a pill cutter. Now. If you don't already have one. TAKE YOUR TIME. Going from 10 mg down to 5 mg right away is a GIANT drop and you'll be feeling it big time. Take that pill cutter and try going from 10 to 7.5 if you can manage to cut the pills that small. There's no need to rush this, really. The symptoms WILL go away, you just gotta stick with it and hang in there. PM me if you want, I don't know if I'll be much help but good luck and hang in there. |

Good luck man. It may be a hard and at times miserable road, but keep the goal at the end in sight and grind it out.
You are a faggot btw. |

Honestly, I would try to get a month supply of Prozac 20 mg (don't think they make anything smaller), switch to that (but have them overlap, give your body time to adjust) and then taper that down and go cold turkey. It has a much longer half life and is one of the easier withdrawals. I was on a low dose of another SSRI that had terrible withdrawal symptoms and Prozac was the only way I could do it, even after tapering the original med. You may be successful with nothing else, but might be something to consider if it doesn't work well. your doc should be familiar with this technique as its the only way many people can get off of certain SSRIs |

Good luck! The doctors piss me off messing with people's lives by writing scripts for this crap when they don't need it. He should have made you try diet and exercise first. Get your butt to the gym and eat right..it will help immensely! |

In the meantime I've completely revamped my health and its time to get off this poison. You need to spend longer at the tapered dosage. I would say minimal 2 weeks for each drop. The longer you stay in taper the easier its going to be for you and your body. I wish you the best of luck on your courageous journey

thanks for the feedback so far. I might lengthen the taper based on several of your comments. Just so you don't ever trust your doctor again (and I work for a biotech and with top oncologist KOLs every day), my GP's advice was to just cut to 5mg for 4-5 days and then quit cold turkey. Thanks for the terrible advice doc. |

The prozac thing didn't work at all for me, so it might or might not, but it could be worth a try. Since it has such a longer half-life, as Gulliver's Travels mentioned, the withdrawal isn't as severe for some people. But no matter what, take your time. No reason to rush it at all. Plus you should also consider timing your drops around a weekend, like on Fridays, so at least on Saturday and Sunday you can do whatever you have to do to cope with the symptoms and minimize any interference you might have at work. |

I'd actually wanted to take a whole week off when I was ready to stop completely, and I might still do that. I need to go spend some time with my dad anyway, and we usually spend the whole time hiking near his house in Albuquerque. |

waxwing: If you taper down 2.5 mgs per drop and spend at least two weeks at each dosage, you should be absolutely fine with no symptoms, brain zaps, etc. You've already been at this for a long time, there are ZERO reasons for you to rush this, that you just want to be off isn't a good enough reason. Allow yourself 3 months to get down. Slow and easy baby, you'll be done by the spring. Good luck and congrats! |

Also - it's not poison. It's just medicine that you may no longer need. Don't demonize it, it's just not for you anymore. |

Taking some time off would be good too. And a hike might help relieve some of the symptoms. The worst for me was when I was sitting still. Granted, when walking down a hall I had to kind of get going in one direction so I didn't run into a wall, but once you get going it's better. Try to get as much sleep as you can manage and exercise as well. If you start feeling down, try a little 5-htp if you haven't given that a shot yet. It's the precursor to serotonin and it might help with mood a little, but look for the smallest dose possible and don't overdo it. It's not expensive and you can usually find it at most drug stores or Walmart or GNC. If you have a hobby that you like, this would be a good time to engage in it rather than being sedentary. It will help get your mind off the symptoms and give you something positive to do. |

good luck, i did it with cymbalta.. broke my neck and was on it for 5 years... one thing is i told myself that i have a few really rough weeks and then it would get better The worst time, was when i stopped it all, I was very irritable, low, getting angry a lot, but id feel like that and tell myself it was coming off the meds and it would pass I made sure I had startchy foods, like potatoes low carbs mean lower mood, my background is as a psychologist so I think that helped a little as well knowing what to expect, anyway so starchy foods for serotonin production.. a couple of weeks in I started taking L-trypophan before bed, and a little 5- htp, and it seemd to help, although im not sure if it was palcebo (5 htp has some research studies to say it helps with depression), I stopped the 5 htp then, and then a couple of weeks later the trypophan. I tried to schedule some exercise daily, and some days that was just doing two laps walking round the mall. Foods liek dates and bananas are emant to be good too. As I said it was very hard for about 6 weeks, and then I adapted and im fine now, but expect it to be rough and tell yourself it will pass. If it doesnt pass keep interacting with your doc and see what they say. |

Thanks again guys. I'm a serious lifter these days so I'm going to focus on my strength goals assuming the side effects don't effect my form and strength.

Day 4 of tapering. I went with the 5mg dose. From roughly 9-12 every morning I have had a very strange sense of irreality. Dreams are vivid and weird. No trouble going to sleep but waking up middle of night constantly.

100% support broseph! tapering is the way to go. still watch for mood swings, taking things harder than you should. also be aware of balance issues that are common. so no juggling chainsaws for a while :( |
