Do you just contact the state commission and take classes that they offer?

I think you take classes first and then work Amateur fights and build a rep and connections. |

you do a course that is recognised by the boxing commission, there are a few like big john mcarthys or herb deans, but there are only a handful of approved trainers... if you havent trained before though do that first, you need an understanding of the arts involved, most of the courses you have to roll on and demonstrate a basic proficency in grappling. I think big johns involves seeinga load of video and naming the techniques, but im not 100% sure on that, so check out his site if you want more info... Herb also allows people to shadow him at an event.. Once you have passed a course you can sign up with the state commission and build experience.. |

With judging the criteria obviously starts and ends with simply having a pulse. |

Willy the Coyote - Thanks a lot, Sly. Seems like it would be a fun gig. No worries... someone mentioned political connections, and in truth in many boxing commitions it helps to be liked... A couple of my friends referee and judge quite regularly and they really enjoy it, but I have seen judges and referees who really suck not get used more... ive also seen ones that suck get used frequently which goes back to the connections thing. A lot of the mma judges and refs that have been around a while were boxing judges/refs who were then used for mma, and while some of them went out and trained and learnt what's what in MMA there are a bunch in some states who know next to nothing about grappling and submissions |

Here is a good interview with info as well! Herb Dean was on Joey Diaz' podcast "The Church of What's Happening Now" and they spoke about this very subject and his classes for it. Check it out! http://stitcher.com/s/player.php?eid=18659178 |

Depends on the state. Where are you located?

For judging, you just show up with a resume and a walking stick.

Never personally worked in Massachusetts, but looking at the athletic commission page looks very similar to states where I have worked as an official (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and DC) Mind you I've never judged/refereed just been a lowly score or time keeper. Any who...if you want to work professional events, as others mentioned, you will have to go to some class ran by them. In VA they won't have more than 2 a year from what I've seen. For amateur events, it will usually be the same situation just see what sanctioning bodies are in your state you will need to be certified by them. They are some sanctioning bodies that do not require certification/ education on the job but I would stray away from those. Working for them will almost always prevent you from working for more established events or the state for professional events later down the road. I don't know if you train at a MA gym but that's how I got in the know of working events. As long as your teammates are competing on a regular basis you should have a run in with some one that can point you in the right direction! If you're ever in VA I could definitely help you out. Hope that helps!

clattymine -ChaosOverkill -JunkieDog - With judging the criteria obviously starts and ends with simply having a pulse. No. However you will need considerable experience as a dirty crack whore for a minimum of 5 years. |

In MA you first need to complete an approved course. Then you apply to the commission. They will call you in to be interviewed at one of the monthly commission meetings and either approve you or not. Unfortunately there are not many shows in MA as attendance has dropped off and there are only about 12-15 events per year here. I don't know if there are any openings right now for judges as they already have too many for the amount of shows. I would recommend first applying to be a deputy commissioner(inspector). They get like $75/show and there is usually plenty of work. That way you can see how everything works from the other side and when you decide to go for judge, you will be recognized, which probably doesn't hurt :) Kevin |

Thanks, Kevin. That's too bad about the attendance drop off. It doesn't sound like I'll have much luck with it, eh? |
