Hi all,

Just wanted to warn you about an issue I have had should you be looking at a sports camera like a GoPro.

I bought a GoPro HD Hero in Nov 2011. I didn't use it until February of 2012 while on a ski trip. I used it for 2 days of skiing. Nothing too crazy as the snow conditions were dangerous so we stuck to moderate slopes. After the trip I uploaded my videos to my computer and put the camera away. I took the camera out and wanted to use it to film my daughter skiing last week and the camera would not turn on. I charged both batteries and no luck. I reached out to GoPro customer support and none of their suggestions worked. I checked online and it turns out that hundreds of people have had the same problem with their GoPros and that it is a defect in the firmware/software.

Problem is the camera has a 1 year warranty and they will not repair or replace it even though it is a well known defect in the camera. I was willing to pay for a repair but they don't offer repairs. My only solution would be to buy a new camera! WTF?

Spending close to $300 on a camera that only worked twice then finding out that the company won't back up its product even though they know that there is an issue with it made me want to warn any of you thinking of buying one to rethink that decision.

If you do buy one, make sure you check it regularly because they will replace it if you get it back to them within that first year.

And so ends Canuck34's consumer report.

Now you tell me!

I just got a go pro 3 hero silver, wasn't impressed the first thing I had to do was update the firmware, I guess I'll be testing it every week

I guess what I would say is make sure you get your money's worth during the 1 year warranty period.

I've heard that the Contour takes better video, but that the mounts aren't as good as the GoPro. Sucks because it really was fun to be able to take the ski videos and I was looking forward to using it mountain biking and surfing.

No way I'm shelling out another $300 for a new one though.

I got this as a gift at xmas. I haven't used it a lot but I plan on taking down the river many times when it starts to thaw here. I do like the GPS feature and it has worked flawlessly so far.

Never used a GoPro - my friend has one and has never had an issue with it.

My GoPro has been great, but the last two times my kid cahrged it for skiing he goofed and we ended up at the hill with a dead camera. However, you now have me wondering so I am gonna charge it now myself and keep my fingers crossed that there is not an issue. We hadn't used it in a few months prior to these last two attempts. I am still under the one year warranty.

However, you say in one sentence that they will not replace or repair it despite the warranty, and a few sentences later you say they will replace it if it is still under warranty. WTF?

The warranty is 1 year. If I was still under 1 year they would have replaced it. We bought it in late 2011 so we are just past the 1 year.

However, as the issue is not one from my use of the camera, but an ongoing issue that many people have had I would have assumed that they would have at least repaired it or given me a credit.

Not sure. Maybe a contour. I'm going to go back to the store where I bought it as I am a regular customer there. They might give me a credit towards a new one seeing as I buy all my ski equipment and clothing for my family there.

Oh, okay, thanks for clarifying that. Also, thanks for the heads up thread. I vote you up for the good service.

Mines been great for a few years. I have a Hero 1 and 2. Through A dozen hunting trips, whitewater kayaking, rock climbing, skiing, long boarding, skydiving, mountain bike downhill and POV porn shoots it's held up great!

I use my Nomad to charge it when out all day. Phone Post

Go Pro's are only cool when a pro is actually using it, everything else seems full retard. I hate watching amatuers video's on those things. It's so bad. I have no idea what the fascination is with them.

Thanks for the review.

I've heard things similar from others- camera can be wonky, but no other camera has as many mount options or mounts as good.

Have used my GoPro to tape several Tough Mudders/Spartan Races etc.

Never had a problem with it, but I will fire it up this weekend to make sure it's all good.

P.S. Vid of me running Tough Mudder shot with my GoPro:

Most people don't use them make videos for you. Most use them to make videos for themselves and for friends. Also, if you are a skier, surfers, mountain biker etc...there are a TON of amazing videos by non-pros that are great to watch. For instance, if you are planning a ski trip you can watch dozens of videos of people skiing runs at the resort you are going to so you can get an idea of what you want to ski.

BTW, the thread title was more to get attention. I'm not really anti gopro, just wanted to warn owners to keep an eye on it if you have one as you approach the warranty expiry because they do not repair them, even for a fee, after that date. Phone Post

Good info!

M y buddy works for polaroid and got me their version of the gopro.  I’m waiting on a memory card, but I’m hoping this thing winds up shooting nice video.  I snowboard and bike enough where I’m hoping to have lots of footage in the next couple months!

Anyone know of any good cheap/free software for video editing that’s good for a novice? (MAC preferable)

Gopros are awesome man. Don't bag on them because you don't take care of your shit.

Pro tip - mount it on your head with the head strap while going down on and banging your ole lady. Edit it. Add a musical track to it, and email it to Sgt606. Phone Post
