Woke up this morning to find my 12 year old dog Addison having trouble walking and her breathing was really shallow and labored. She was fine last night, even playful so I knew it wasn't good. Took her to vet and after a few ultrasounds they found she had pericardial effusion. Basically, the sac around her heart was filled with blood/fluid.

More than likely, it was caused by cancer and the tumor in her heart finally started bleeding out. She was getting worse by the minute and the prognosis was pretty terrible. We decided to euthanize her. We spent an hour alone with her saying our goodbyes and then we held her while the doctor administered the drug. She went very peacefully which is what we wanted.

She was a fucking awesome dog and I will miss her so much. Sorry to depress you guys but I didn't want to be the only person bumbed out today.

Sucks man, sorry to hear it.

same dog that would go sleep in the bushes?

I absolutely dread the day when my dog either dies, or needs to be put down.

Best advice I can give you is you will never get over this. You will just learn to live with it. It sucks but that is how it is

So sorry to hear that.

Take comfort in the fact that you gave her the very best life you could and that at the end you let her go in peace.

Rest In Peace, Addison.

Thanks guys. Yeah, same dog that I posted that kept hiding in the bushes. I'm happy she didn't really suffer which is always my fear. She was a great dog and wouldn't deserve that. This is the 2nd dog I've euthanized in the last 2 years. Bubba, my 15 year old pug, was the last one. This time was harder. I always had a stronger connection to Addision and also, she was a bit more alert of what was going on. Bubba was really out of it when we euthanized him so it may it a little easier.

I have dogs all my life and I've learned to understand that this is part of owning a dog. Fortunately, my two pugs are only 6 years old so we hopefully won't have to go through this again for a long time. It also helps having them. Makes it a little easier to not come home to a house with no dog.

Are you planning on getting another?

I lost my dog 3 years ago (she was 10)... was so sad. Main reason why I haven't gotten another, because you outlive them.

We have two other dogs. So no, not getting another dog. However, I will always have at least one dog. I can't ever remember not having a dog in my life.
