I was reminded of this on another thread. And i know there are more than a couple of guys here that are married to Filipinas.

Recently, my brother in law and i were talking about our kids and i referenced them being half Asian. He says to me with 100% certainty, Filipinos aren't Asian, they're Hispanic.

I told him the island of the Philippines is in Asia, so at the very least by that definition they are Asian. I also told him that the statistics i could find, that less than 5% of Filipinos have West European ancestry.

Does anyone else consider Filipinos Hispanic?

Or are Asian and Hispanic both wrong and they are something else?

Thanks OG.

Really? I never heard that before.

I know they always talk about the Spanish that came to the island and how it influenced their language, names, etc.

But i never once heard that they were Spanish.

Is this like every American white guy being part Indian (feather, not dot)?

I'm a Filipino.  We are Asian/Pacific Islanders by geography, because we are located in Southeast Asia, and we are an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.  We are racially intermingled with the Spanish because they colonized the islands for 300 years.

This.

Also, there are three types of Filipinos. The indigenous that are usually shorter and dark skin, dark eyyes. The Chinese/Filipino, lighter skin, and some cases taller with more asian features. And last the Spanish/Filipino who generally are taller, lighter skinned complexion.

You can also have a mixture, ie. my dad is more chinese/filipino, my mother spanish/portugese/filipino. I ended up being light skin with more Chinese features and taller at 6 foot.

I understnad the Spanish colinization. But from what i understand, a very small percentage actually have Spanish genes.

I am very interested in making sure my children know as much about their history as possible, i just never even considered that they would be Spanish beofre this.

I just assumed Asian/Pacific Islanders with some Spanish influence. It's like i would never consider someone from Hong Kong or India to be British.

Filipinos are a mixed bag of people:

1) People from mainland Asia that island hopped, e.g., people of Malay descent

2) People with Chinese ancestry, especially Filipinos from Northern Luzon (e.g., due to traders from China). For example, I believe that Ferdinand Marcos had some Chinese ancestry.

3) European Spaniards born in the Philippines and Mestizos

4) During Spanish rule, the Spaniards during the Galleon runs (Manila to Mexico) would man ships with Filipinos and Mexicans. Sometimes people from either group would jump ship and stay in the other country and interbreed with the population. I got this tidbit from Guro Dan Inosanto.

5) America tried to "colonize" the Philippines for awhile. It was a Protectorate. Who knows how many Americans have interbred with the local population. There is still a strong American influence, even up to now, e.g., air force bases.

6) The indigenous population that was there. The Aeta I believe.

This,
Spaniards Raped the Filipinos like they did the rest of the world while traveling, Now they are not fully asian anymore.

Same thing for Guamanians. Those people on Guam are Filipinos mixed up as well.
Guam was an island where the Filipinos sent their Prisoners/COnvicts and the rest is history.

Filipinos are the most self hating Asians. Don't be fooled 98% of Filipinos you meet have less than 1% Spanish blood, the few actual Spanish looking Filipinos I've met simply call thenselves Filipinos. Most Filipino Americans are not Spanish at all. Lol at some Filipino that looks like he Lived in a remote Amazon hill tribe his whole life trying to convince people he is half Spanish. Phone Post
