I like a couple of overnight Millionaires songs, however, i am beginning to see now the value of a professional rexcording/mixing person. I didn't like the speration or tone of the electric in Play on the Horizon, sounds really amateue, IMHO, but better than I could do!!

Hi PrisonMattressPuncher -- Thanks for the feedback.  I would say that's a fair assessment.

I agree, a professional mixer and recorder is a tremendous asset.  No doubt about it, and my work would definitely benefit from it.

Guitar tone is always tricky, and something I am always fiddling with, especially for my lead guitar lines.  I've been playing guitar solos for years now and I still haven't found a sound that I love, so the journey continues.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to the tunes and the constructive criticism!

It sounds like you plug your guitar directly into the computer interface rather than miking your amp? (BTW, what interface do you use to get the guitar into your computer?)

Pantsless,

Just a couple more notes about the midi drums:

1) I try to add slight-to-moderate reverb to the kits, so that they don't sound too dry.  Reverb the equivalent of a small room (not a club, concert hall, or an arena.)

2) I try to change the velocity of the snare strikes to give them a little variety (especially because they are repeating figures.)  If the snare is programmed at maximum velocity/volume every time, it sounds a little too perfect, so I ease off the attack and dial it back every now and then, I think they're in the range from 110 to 127.

3) I usually put in a crash cymbal at the start of a verse or a chorus, just to signal a transition.  That's just a personal preference, but I think it helps the song structure.

4) If there's a snare drum roll, I try to use alternating snare samples on each strike (I think every generic GarageBand kit has multiple snare hits), so it doesn't sound too uniform.  I don't know if anyone can even tell, but it makes me feel better to do it that way.

Hey thanks man! This is good stuff! I tend to get a little "copy and paste" crazy with the drums. Lazy I guess.

Here is another Garageband song from me. Skip to 3:36 to enjoy a horrible, yet comical Lady Gaga cover..
