I feel as though a super fight must consist of two current champions-one moving up or down a weight class. Calling any good fight a super fight seems to hurt the legitimacy of super fights to begin with IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving Aldo vs Pettis, but I don't think calling every good matchup a super fight is good for the MMA. Goldie saying it over and over to hype Edgar v Aldo didn't help my opinion also. Discuss

I feel 156 was a legit super-fight given that edgar had fought in 6 back to back title fights at a higher weight class before dropping to fight Aldo. not matching the criteria exactly but pretty damn close especially given how close people thought the fights were. pettis who has already been defeated by a gatekeeper in his home weight class...not so much. exciting fight...but not a "super fight" |

Belts have nothing to do with it. Honestly the skill of the fighters isn't the top priority. The definition of a "super fight" is a fight that has been much anticipated and the winner is highly debated. Yes, generally it's a dominant champion going up or down to face another dominate champion. But it could have been Randy and Fedor back when... Chuck making it past Rampage and into the finals against Wandy would have been a superfight. Pacman isn't a champ but it would still be a superfight (although less now) if he fought PBF. Right now the only fight I can think of that I would call a "superfight" in MMA would be Anderson and Jones. It would be a travesty if it did anything under 1.5 million buys and can you imagine the debate over who'd win? The bookies would have a fit trying to get the line right. If Aldo went up to fight Frankie (if Frankie would have never lost to Bendo) would have been close, but not enough demand for the fight IMO. GSP vs Anderson might sell the most and could be called the biggest fight do to the draw both guys have, but it's not as competitive and Spider Bones IMO. Anything under a million buys (or not heavily watched oversees on network TV) can't be called a "super fight" IMO |
