The UFC does have a production company. The UFC didn't "buy" time on Spike. The UFC can and does develop TV programs, which it pitches to it's network partners. The UFC has to develop said program ideas as part of its contract.

TUF was a time-buy, no different than an infomercial. Spike didn't take a chance on anything, they were paid to air the show. |

nnwourgeet - Since the UFC was the one that bought time on Spike to air TUF, it's not fair to say that Spike took a chance and made the UFC.Yup. The ultimate fighter was basically a paid program/infomercial type deal. UFC had to pay for the time. Spike didn't give a shit about mma and could have cared less whether it succeeded or failed. FACT

I just wanted to come out of lurking for YEARS to say that was an excellent post. We need more of this common sense line of thought. Peace. Oh and a vote up too! |

Interesting, thanks OP. VU. Curious to hear the producers are the same as Amazing Race... |

As we all have learned we know how this story will end. Bellator will eventually fade into the night with the UFC remaining on top. We all should know by now that UFC was there in the beginning and is still the most recognized MMA brands worldwide. You think Randy would know that ZUFFA and Dana always come out on top in the end. Pride, Wec, Strikeforce, IFL, Dream, Affliction, BoDog and every other org that made any noise is gone. We've all seen this before.

nnwourgeet - Since the UFC was the one that bought time on Spike to air TUF, it's not fair to say that Spike took a chance and made the UFC.Ok. The WWE made them. How is that? Why you ask? Vince McMahon allowed Spike to put TUF on at 1105pm AFTER Monday Night Raw. This was because Spike wanted to use WWE to sell the UFC and assumed (correctly with Lesnar) that the fans would cross over. Vince saw the UFC as a non-threatening apple to his orange and personally agreed to the idea. In the end, it was pro wrestling antics like Leben-Koscheck that made TUF and it was a post-RAW audience that watched and fell in love. You go back and air TUF on TUESDAY without a WWE lead-in and there is no way it does the ratings it did. So, if you want to nitpick and not give Spike any credit; go ahead and thank Vince McMahon for helping out. If Vince vetoes that time slot, Spike takes his side because WWE was more important to Spike then. It would have changed many a thing regarding TUF. But go ahead and buy into the narrative that Dana created it all and Forrest and Stephan capped it off.

Great post. I don't respect the UFC. They never want anybody to eat but themselves and then get all butthurt when someone tries to make a living.

FACT Not familiar with TV stuff but if the UFC bought a time buy, paid them 10 mill to air it could Spike cancel the season halfway through? Or does that money you paid guarantee you the entire airing of the season and the finale? Now of course if they didnt have a good lead in people might not have watched and if nobody watched a deal between Spike/UFC after the first season finale wouldnt have been made. So how does that work? Could they have cut off TUF midway through or were they contractually obligated to run the entire first season in full no matter what? |

I believe Paul Heyman told Vince don't do it, don't allow TUF on after Raw but Vince allowed it anyway |

Authority Figure - The UFC does have a production company. Yes, the UFC can come up with ideas. But, unlike Spike or another actual network, they can't do anything other than present the ideas for Fox. The UFC has a production department, but they produce the UFC programs. TUF, for example, is handled by different folk. |

newbornbabynoob -Lynchman - One problem with the OP: The UFC is not a network and can't actually greenlight TV projects. Oh come now, Frank and Dana dislike one another, but Frank is every bit as responsible as Dana. Frank Shamrock is not some poor little lamb that got bullied. He has gone out of his way to bash the UFC and Dana constantly over the years. The dispute is not one-sided. Randy and Dana are both adults and each has done his share of questionable stuff. But the OP declares that "Randy’s on the side of righteousness." Give me a break. No need to feel sorry for Dana, but Randy is hardly a saint. |

Pessimist_Pete - Bellator = XFL Yep, and likely always will be. For the mainstream, all MMA is "UFC".
Listen, I've been touting Bellator on here for years now. In fact, guys like DamnSevern and a few others were the only ones making Bellator threads for the longest while. What I'm getting at is this - I love Bellator more than most people, but I'm not delusional about them either. It will take a long time before another MMA org gets to UFC level of marketibility - Likely never to be honest.... Just the way things are. UFC is a household name. To most people. Bellator is UFC. |

Let's be honest if Viacom is willing to pay for talent and can offer guys like Randy spin off type shows. They could make waves if they go sign Rampage and Barnett. I also think what you will see is a situation similar to what the WWE and WCW way back when where they sign guys and and don't cut guys just so the competitors can't use them. The UFC won't go letting name guys go after a few losses so you can see them on spike a few weeks later.
