Basically comes down to the philosophy used in some schools: don't give out "A"s because the kids who got "D"s will feel bad.

Since wrestling is basically dominated by a handful of countries, the little countries feel left out. Jamaica can't medal in wrestling, so delete wrestling.

Would be interesting to see what the television ratings are for Olympic wrestling over the course of the last 20 years or so.

My guess is they're pretty low in most countries.

Would be surprised if that didn't play a factor in this.

its all about this the tv ratings and how you cant put wrestling into a prime time spot just like baseball its too slow for the olympics, competition runs too long and terrible shit like that

Nope, Judo, as an example, has more medals concentrated in the top 4 countries. The 100/200m sprint is dominated by Jamaica, US, and various Carribean countries. What about basketball?

I think it has more to do with poor viewership, which is also a fucking sham.

It's crazy man. It's practised everywhere, has zero barrier to entry, has a huge talent base spread out across the globe, AND is ancient and storied.

This is plain disrespectful to tradition, and a clearly shows the IOC's priorities. Fuck these people.

I sincerely doubt ausgepichts's explanation of the IOC having to remove sports to somehow even the score.

If they wanted to do that, there are other sports much more heavily dominated by single countries. Table Tennis is basically all China. Basketball, all US. Archery, almost all South Korea.. etc.

The bottom line is that the Olympic games are incredibly expensive to host.

The 2012 London Olympics had a budget of £9.3 billion (~$14.5 billion)

In order for the hosts to break even, they have to sell tickets.

They probably quite simply looked at how many people bought tickets for wrestling, and decided it was an unacceptable expense.

Personally, I think they should seriously consider axing canoe slalom instead. Surely an extremely expensive venue to build (white water centre), and will see zero use after the games.

Political Correctness isn't a factor. In 2016 fucking Golf is in the Olympics. How many small countries have pro golf players? Lots of small poor countries and middle eastern countries have their only competitors in wrestling, there is no barrier of entry to be good at wrestling. It's about $$$$ They keep the ping pong around because they make $$$ from Asian Markets. They keep bringing in sports that the western world has big name recognition with already outside of the Olympics. Example; Tiger Woods Shaun White and Kobe Bryant are famous without the Olympics.
