Fighters that have been their whole career in the UFC, should have some kind of a pension, not only the selected few choosen by DW

Union first, but the sport as has been talked about is not condusive to a union as there's no built in reason like team sports where athlete would care what one of his fellow athletes has or doesn't have to take care of him as a safety net.

It would be revolutionary in labour law for a major combat sport to be unionized. There needs to be a consensus based commonwealth most fighters want to buy into and support

I feel like a guy that has worked in the UFC for 10 years isn't the guy that needs the money as much as some of the lower level fighters, that maybe are in and out of the UFC a couple of times throughout their career. Lol he's asking for more money from the UFC already? And look, a union won't accomplish anything imo. The fighters who have the power to get these things done want completely different things than the ones a union would actually benefit. I don't think GSP or Jones are going to feel like threatening the UFC with anything to help out guys on the undercard or people like Tito. Phone Post

What about someone like Gary Goodridge and what he is suffering through right now? His life wasn't on the line?

Did Waitresses go on about their lives being on the line when they had to breathe in smoke all day.

People die working construction, or working in factories or workshops all the time, they don't go on about their lives being "on the line".

They can't go on about how safe mma is compared to boxing, football etc, and then talk about putting lives on the line.

It's also something they chose to do, it wasn't forced upon them.

Maybe but tito isn't just sitting down expecting money, he's working after retirement. He runs his Punishment stuff, which i have no idea how successful it is but i'm sure it earns some decent money, and now he's becoming a Manager for MMA fighters.

His wife/gf or whatever they are is also worth millions of dollars, so they aren't exactly struggling.

IMO he means well, and is trying to help people out, he just may not be going about it in the best way possible.

A man who has been rendered unconscious from strikes has only seconds for the referee to save him from a potentially lethal blow from a man who has been instructed not to stop attempting to kill him until he has been stopped by the referee. The potential for this scenario exists in every fight. Obscene amounts of money are made off of this potential scenario happening, and bonuses are given to ensure the likelihood of that scenario happening. I'd consider that putting your life on the line, no matter whether the guy chose to do it or not.

It would be a drop in the bucket for Zuffa to install a fund from which retired fighters could receive benefits. For the amount of riches that have been poured into their coffers on the backs of bloody and broken young men, I'd say that NOT instituting some kind of safety net for them is borderline criminal.

At the end of the day, the promoter has very few responsibilities to the fighter after the fight contract ends.

Many fighters see the UFC jobs given to Kenny Florian, Matt Hughes and Chuck Liddell as a "pension."

So there are options when a career is over, they are only realistic for three or four guys out of the hundreds on the UFC roster.

Also asking for a pension, but having it come from a percentage of fighters purses? Fighters are going to want their money now, today!

I'm sure waitresses not wanting lung cancer played a part into why you cant smoke in restaurants today.

As someone who has worked in construction, workers DO go on about their lives being on the line.

The fact of the matter is that people HAVE died doing MMA and that it is indeed very possible to have life altering or deadly injuries while competing within this great sport of MMA. Just because the UFC and the rest of MMA has a good track record in its short history does not mean that its athletes are immune to these injuries that could potentially cause death.

It is something they choose to do and I agree that if they want out then they could go work in a grocery store but that doesnt change the fact that they should be compensated a little more for their efforts. The UFC has taken some good steps towards raising the pay of their athletes but that doesnt mean they should just settle for the level its at now.
