They never were an "old" team. Common misconception....

Through the 90's and 00's, Detroit has managed to maintain a balance of a strong core, key veteran players (aka Old players) and young overacheivers.

As the core players aged, the young players moved up to take their place. (Zetterberg replacing Yzerman). The core players became the veterans (Yzerman, Chelios, Lidstrom, etc). The wings keep feeding in to the system young talent (Filapula, Hudler, Ericsson, Ledba, Howard). Kenny Holland is the master at adding and subtracting where needed.

It is the circle of life, my friend.
