the bike starts and idles ok so long as the choke is on, but once you let the choke down it dies, no matter how long you run it or how warm it is it dies once the choke is off. the bike has about 22k on it. any ideas as to what might be causing this? |

Sounds like the idle adjustment is jacked. Get a service manual and find out where the idle adjust screw on the carb(s) is. |

If no carb adjustments have been made recently, I'd say the pilot jets may be plugged a little. Does it just not idle or can you not keep it running with the throttle at all? Worn out needle jets will do some funny things, too. 22K miles is enough that I'd be looking at them, too. |

It's not that tough to inspect and clean the jets. Take the carbs off, remove the float bowls (look for build up of shit in the bowls) and the jets are right there staring at you. Remove them, see if you can see daylight through them or if there is some kind of blockage. I use carb cleaner and a strand of copper to rod them out and that should take care of it. This is kind of common for bikes because most people leave them parked for the winter with gas in the carbs. |
