Shooters were US military?Seven shot dead at US army base
Seven people have been killed and 20 others injured in a pair of shootings at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, the US Army has confirmed. One person has been arrested and at least one more is on the run, reports say. The base has been locked down. NBC News network said the two suspects were in military uniform and that the shooter-at-large was believed to have a high-powered sniper rifle. Fort Hood, near the town of Killeen, is the largest US military base. Home to about 40,000 US troops, the base lies between Austin and Waco, about 60 miles (97 km) from each city. It is not yet clear whether those reported killed and injured are civilians or military personnel. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama had been briefed on the incident. Army spokesman Lt Col Nathan Banks at the Pentagon told the Associated Press news agency the shootings had begun at about 1330 (1930 GMT) on Thursday at a personnel and medical processing centre at Fort Hood. He said two shooters had been involved. The second incident took place at a theatre on the base, he said. Local congressman John Carter, speaking to NBC News, said gunfire had erupted during a graduation ceremony. The BBC's Adam Brookes in Washington says there are military police and Swat teams on the scene, and the FBI is on the way from Austin and Waco. Schools in the area have also been locked down. |

The shooters were in uniform, not confirmed if they are civs or actual military right now. One shooter in custody, luckily caught them before 2 pm when a graduation ceremony was suppose to happen. The base is currently on lock down, not sure if they are gonna lock down any others. They haven't locked us down yet. |

A senior administration official told NBC News analyst Roger Cressey that the suspect who was in custody was an Army major with an Arabic-sounding name. The official said the shootings could have been a criminal matter rather than a terrorism-related attack and that there was no intelligence to suggest a plot against Fort Hood. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33678801/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts |

Nov. 5, 2009 — Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer. The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan. The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said. The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack. The general called the attack "a terrible tragedy, stunning." He said the community was "absolutely devastated." The extent of the injuries of victims "varies significantly," according to Cone. President Obama called the Fort Hood shootings a "horrific outburst of violence." "It if difficult enough to lose" soldiers overseas, but said it is "horrifying that they should lose their lives at an Army base in the U.S.," he said. The president said "my prayers are with the wounded and the families of the fallen." Cone said the motive for the attack, which took place just after 1:30 p.m. CT, is unclear. |
