many people today wouldn't catch the family structure those 2 were growing up in (and thus societal expectations wer completely different) OR the Halachic REQUIREMENT that he divorce her under those conditions. Marriage and Divorce were incredibly serious acts requiring written contracts (think about the era we are talking about! how many people knew how to read and write proficiently!) and were legislated with requirements and binding conditions on both sides. To violate any of these laws was a big taboo (as we saw with King David and his desperate attempts to cover it up). For a simple country-side labourer and a county girl- this would have been downfall, disgrace and dishonor for the rest of their lives (given that the chances that they lived to see a Jubilee while still young enough to marry would be slim).
