UFC 123 almost certain for Palace in November By MIKE BRUDENELL Free Press Sports Writer A spokesman for the Palace this morning confirmed that a Mixed Martial Arts super show likely will be held at the Auburn Hills venue Nov. 20. Palace senior vice president of sports and events Stu Mayer told the Free Press that he and representatives of the Ultimate Fighting Championship are “working in that direction.” “We are working the details through, but things look positive,” said Mayer, who was involved in hosting UFC 9 at Cobo Arena on May 17, 1996. “Marilyn Hauser (executive vice president of Palace Sports and Entertainment) and I have worked together to clear dates and make this a reality.” The Free Press first reported Aug. 20 that the UFC was looking at Detroit and two other venues as possible sites for a pay-per-view MMA show. Today, the Free Press quoted Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission chair Dr. James Weber as saying the Nov. 20 date is “a done deal.” |
