The old rap on it is the "sanchin" training isn't good for you. Saw something about the lifespan of karate Masters and the ones who practiced the "sanchin" styles didn't live quite as long. Take that for what it's worth. |

shen - This is true. Too much stress on your internal organs. If you do you kata correctly, you can only do it ONCE a day. TOO MUCH STRESS and energy. |

Never heard that! Is that the thing where you tighten up all your muscles and do that intense breathing? |

Ogami Itto - fuckkk Haha! Can't remember the name of the show, but I remember seeing this back in the day. Dude looks like a ghey version of Christopher Penn, aka "Travis Brickley" from Best of the Best, but he's got some balls. Also a great example of the nuttiness and cultish behavior that's alive and well in asian martial arts. If I'm not mistaken, this was also the show with the uechi-ryu master breaking shit with finger and toe strikes. |

Ogami Itto - Never heard that! Is that the thing where you tighten up all your muscles and do that intense breathing? Yup, do some research on Goju instructors(legit). Many pass away at an earlier age. Many suspect the KATA and breathing as the cause. |

If you want to see something you will look up Lou Angle in Joplin Mo. (if it is still there) and see Hanshi do sanchin on his 73 birthday, Im only 57 and still OK. Sanchin will not hurt you. Go see Gogen Yamaguchi on You Tube if you wanna see the Grand Master. My system of All American Combat Karate is a derivative of Gojuryu and so are many other Japanese and American Styles. |

Still waiting for the videos that make it look cool:) As for the fat dude with the bleached hair, forging too hot leads to massive grain growth in steel, making it very, very weak. |

It is said Sanchin training can induce high blood pressure and lead to hemroids. A few of the videos were "cool". It is interesting to see how much traditional Gojo is becoming more lke Kyokushinkai. |

"It is interesting to see how much traditional Gojo is becoming more lke Kyokushinkai." ...and how much Kyokushinkai was already like Muay Thai ...and San Shou is like bad Muay Thai ...and "combat hapkido" is like bad BJJ The list goes on. Whenever these guys try to "functionalize" their arts they almost immediately begin to look nothing like the kata and static techniques they spend so many hours practicing. |

The only similarities Kyokushin has to muay thai is the leg kicks. The hands and kicks are totally different, you just have to watch the two to see just how different they are. Dutch muay thai draws alot of there roots from kyokushin so maybe that is where you see the similarities. |

John Frankl, You said: "Whenever these guys try to "functionalize" their arts they almost immediately begin to look nothing like the kata and static techniques they spend so many hours practicing." I've notice that to. I would say the kata and the so called static techniques must represent something different then what the art tries to functionalize itself as. |

John Frankl - "It is interesting to see how much traditional Gojo is becoming more lke Kyokushinkai." sorry, i don't think machida looks anything like wand. also, since hapkido had it's roots in japanese jujutsu of the daito ryu school, a wrist lock is a wrist lock and a throw is a throw. |

"sorry, i don't think machida looks anything like wand." This tells us very little. Even within individual styles people don't always look alike. Watch the Ali vs. Frazier fights, for just one example. "also, since hapkido had it's roots in japanese jujutsu of the daito ryu school, a wrist lock is a wrist lock and a throw is a throw." The first part of the sentence is very true, which is why hapkido and daito ryu look quite similar in places. The second part is not so tenable. Very little in hapkido, as it is most commonly practiced, looks like BJJ. |

John Frankl - "sorry, i don't think machida looks anything like wand." except for the fact that machida's guard, sideways dominant position and punches are very shotokan, his linear movments darting in and out are shotokan, and his kick delivery looks nothing like muay thai. also, hapkido looks very similar to bjj: have you ever seen royce gracie's bjj book on self defense with another gracie? also, have you seen rorion or even helio demostrate the self defense ciriculum? it looks straight out of a hapkido school. also, the hkd schools that specialize in groundwork do resemble bjj to the untrained eye, although i'll let you call it sloppy bjj if you think it's more accurate. |

Some of the Gracie self-defense things look similar to hapkido because they are in fact, exactly the same. And they are equally non-functional (or low probability, if you prefer). But these things are not what BJJ is about (today). BJJ has more in common with American high school wrestling than hapkido. How you train dictates what you will train and how well you will be able to do it. And I'm speaking as an old school Goju-Ryu stylist. |

i was addressing the point 'that very little in hapkido resembles bjj'. if you look at the helio schools that teach sd it looks like hkd. to address your point keseki specifically, non functional in mma or everywhere? because there are bouncers and cops who have successfully used locks and restraints. granted, their opponents are not well trained, but i don't see how you say something working in the real world isn't functional. they are using them on non compliant opponents. |
