Judo/Sambo >> Good judo book

Fighting Judo is fantastic. So is Okano's 2 book set (tachi + newaza). There are so many excellent out-of-print judo books - Kudo, Geesink, Seisenbacher etc. You're going to pay top-dollar for them. Canon of Judo is pretty cool though the image quality isn't so good. "Best Judo" by Inokuma and Sato is well done, has high quality images and is much more affordable. Spartan79, What do you want out of a book? Mostly bio? You have ignored this user.

I think Modern Judo by George Kerr and Peter Seisenbacher may interest you. It goes into Seisenbacher's life while training for his 2 back-to-back olympic golds. Has a section on his techniques as well. It's out-of-print but not so expensive. I'll doublecheck the contents tonight. I liked Mark Law's book but wasn't blown away by it. I remember reading about Yamashita in Law's book and realizing I'd read most of it before in Yamashita's own "Fighting Spirit of Judo" which is a solid mix of bio/musings/technique but is out-of-print now and quite expensive when you find a copy. Looked through "Modern Judo Techniques of East and West" by Kerr and Seisenbacher. Table of Contents: Ch1: The Japanese Tradition: A personal history by George Kerr Ch2: The Western tradition: Judo for Sport by Seisenbacher Ch3: The Modern View: by Kerr and Seisenbacher Ch4: Contest Judo: Championship Winning Techniques by Seisenbacher Ch5: Modern Training Methods by Kerr Appendices: I: The History of Judo in the West by Kerr II: Word Championships and Olympic Games: Results and Analysis by Seisenbacher. 169 content pages with glossary and index to ~200pp total. The are many photos and I estimate 60% of the book is devoted to techniques and training. The techniques shown for the most part are Seisenbacher's and he explains how and why he developed them, sometimes in response to certain repeated opponents.Kerr talks about the evolution of judo as he sees it in relation to his own background and experience as competitor and coach. Yamashita's "Fighting Spirit of Judo" follows the same format(not co-written) though it has much more technique and less bio/thoughts on judo. There are a few bios on Kano as well as some compiled writings of his. If you read Japanese, there are bios on Kimura, Inoue and a few others. Most of the time for English judo books, seems that bios and history are just another short part of technical manuals. Off of the judo track, there's "Angry White Pyjamas" by Robert Twigger, who documents his 1 year intensive Yoshinkan aikido course at the Tokyo Riot Police. Entertaining and brutal in parts.
