Here is what contributed to boxing's decline. Ready? Boxing is not taught in schools or colleges, most towns don't even have boxing gyms anymore. They are relegated to small programs in poor neighborhoods Corrupt decisions Ali retiring Boxing leaving network tv to premium tv and then PPV (People loved seeing Tyson blast guys out in 30 seconds, but after they got their PPV bill they realized that they paid $50 for 3 terrible fights and 30 seconds of Tyson hitting Bruce Seldon on the shoulder. bad decisions Boxer's ridiculous behavior (It adds buzz sometimes, but in the end, it makes boxing look like a circus) Losing boxing shows (USA network's show being the most notable) Terrible decisions Olympic boxing sucking (see multiple threads on boxingground and UG) A lack of compelling talent from the US, decline in the golden gloves program. MMA putting out an outstanding product Awful decisions Big name boxers fighting only 1 - 2 times a year Obvious "funny business" (Arum's offices being raided, Margarito's loaded gloves, etc)... and horrendous decisions The biggest fights failing to live up to expectations (For example De la Hoya was outstanding in his fights with Vargas and Quartey and compelling vs Whittaker, but his biggest fights were snoozers vs Trinidad and Mayweather) Again, fans have a bad taste in their mouth. |

That's a good article. Unfortunately, boxing promoters obviously don't give a shit about changing boxing. Its pretty obvious they want to cash in on what they can, while they can and if they crash the sport into the ground, so what? |

lack of tv and the best matches not being made thanks to king and arum. tuesday night fights on usa really helped build a lot of guys. espn doesn't really promote it's friday night fight like it should. would be great if 50 cent takes his shows to broadcast network tv. that would be a huge step in getting it back in the american public eye, sport is fine in europe. de la hoya is in part to blame. no way in the word should he have not fought whitaker, quartey and trinidad again. those would have been epic rematches. why no whitaker-chavez 2. how on earth did tyson and bowe and tyson and mercer or tyson and moorer not link up. bowe-moorer. lewis-bowe. foreman-tyson. terry norris-hopkins in 96-97. those were all very good fights that could have been made |
