Herniated disc L-5 pinching S-1 nerve. Still got 3 weeks before I can do anything and I'd like to know what I should do starting back to the gym. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Phone Post

What surgery? disectomy, fusion? I had a laminectomy and micro disectomy on the same disk as you, rushed back to training in 2 months and ruptured the disk again leading to fusion surgery.

You should listen to your surgeon and physio on what you should be doing (which is likely to be far different from what you feel you can do). - Koga!

Decompression I believe? It's where they cut off the disc until its no longer pitching the nerve. Phone Post

Sounds like you had a discectomy (the decompression is the effect of the surgery):

A laminectomy works from the other side to shave back the bone to relieve pressure on the nerve.
