Friend of mine is dying of COPD. He is end stage, gotten worse last few weeks. Told me today he doesn't think he will make Christmas. Also said he's so tired but he's been afraid to fall asleep. Sucks when all you can do is sit there. I try to make him laugh and feel "normal"...let him know that somebody cares and is there. (his dad has alzheimers, rest of family is far away) Sorry for the baw thread, just needed to vent it out. Not sure how else to deal with it |

Not much to really say but keep your head up and be there for him. I couldn't imagine how difficutl it must be. |

Sorry this is happening. I guess the best thing you can do is continue to be there for him. It would really suck to die alone.

Wow, thanks guys. He's 54. Not super young, but not really old either. It's raining here but somehow a bunch of dust got kicked up |

Hey - you're a great friend. He'll appreciate you in these rough times and you can always know you were there for him til the end. No fun to have to go through this - but just continue to be there for him in whatever capacity you can and he wants. You're a good dude. Every one of us hopes to have a friend like you when it's this time in their life. |

Sorry to hear. Anything a bunch of anonymous OGers can do? I had never heard of it and the following on Wiki blew my mind (my bolding): "Worldwide, COPD ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in 1990. It is projected to become the fourth leading cause of death worldwide by 2030, due to an increase in smoking rates and demographic changes in many countries.[4] COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and the economic burden of COPD in the U.S. in 2007 was $42.6 billion in health care costs and lost productivity.[5][6]" I mean, wtf? |

Shitty deal OP. If it helps, I've been there. I watched my best buddy die at the age of 29 from cancer. I was there for him and with him the whole way. It's not easy, but one thing I'm very thankful for is that I got a chance to say good bye. A couple years later, another really good friend died in a car crash. For some reason, the shock and devastation from the car crash was way harder to deal with emotionally. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. |

If he's up for it, maybe you could track down some of his other friends to Skype with him. Also, maybe you guys could celebrate Christmas early this year. Do a huge feast and live it up (even if it's just the two of you). |
