No way. The path to ruin for martial arts is worrying about making them more "spectator friendly". WuShu, anyone,...? You don't change the rules of a supposed "fighting art" to appeal visually to people who are never going to watch it anyway. TKD and Judo have both bent over backwards to be more "visually appealing" to the masses --and, some would argue, made themselves "lesser" as combative systems in the process. Both are FAR more interesting for the average person to watch than BJJ, and still basically nobody watches either of them. |

BJJ is NOT a spectator sport. Some of us would like to keep it that way. |

Hmmmm. Make bjj interesting to watch?? Maybe add striking and get rid of the gi because that slows things down and makes it boring. Get some refs to stand the fight back up to the feet if fighters aren't "working" from the ground... I bet a shit ton of people would watch that kind of bjj.

Two high level competitors of any grappling sport competing is usually pretty boring for the casual observer. Number 1 seed vs number 32? Now that's usually a beat down that's highlight reel worthy

shen -. Karate suffered the same fate. Practicality thrown to the wind for visual appeal and mass marketing

shen - watching sport jiujitsu definitely does not bring to mind a "fighting art" If we made it like combat sambo match, then we'd see more "fighting art". Lumax Cup had gi tops, striking and grappling......IIRC Egan Inoue fought in it? Something almost like that |

They should do proper rankings and have seeds/seeded brackets at all comps, at least the first couple of rounds would be positively impacted (for the spectators benefit, not necessarily the lower seeds benefit...)

How to make Jiu Jitsu more appealing to the masses: Add punches and kicks, it's easier to understand. Less groundwork too, according to our focus group - "It looks kinda gay." Lose the gi, looks too "karate kid" - maybe have them wear tight shorts for the female demographic instead. Oh, and put it in a cage. |

Sgt. Slaphead -shen - you mean like the "combat jiu jitsu" that Eddie Bravo was trying to get going? No stiking unless on the ground. I think things become a better spectator sport the more the spectators understand the sport. The need to understand the nuances of what is going on. |

mrgoodarmbar -Sgt. Slaphead -shen - bravo didnt have gi right?......gotta have gi and sitting to guard without grips to w/o grips or clinch to avoid striking gets you a taser penalty! |

Probably the only thing that would really work would be to dust-off the Yamma Pit and hold matches there. |
