is masking that much better than say, making a copy of the layer of the pic you are working on? i guess i'm set in my ways, i make a copy of the pic and work on editing the layer copy |

Yeah it's a lot better because you can't get back what you've already erased, but you can with a mask, plus it's not any harder to do, just get into the habit of using a mask. |

copying an entire layer will double the file size. Using a mask will only increase it slightly. In large files, you really wanna use masks, or you'll be waiting forever for the tools to finish - depending on yor power. If unedited files need to go somewhere else, it's best to use masks. |
