I just found out that I need to take the Graduate Record Exam next month in order to have my results in time to apply for my Masters. I honestly know very little about this exam. I'm sure lots of you guys have taken it, any pointers? are those guide books worth buying? |

It's a lot like the SAT. The questions are basically the same difficulty level, and now you're a college grad so they should be even easier. I didn't buy any books, I just used the excellent review software which is free off of the GRE site. It basically lets you simulate doing a full test, with answer key so you can debug your score later. |

Andrew Yao is correct. I found it easier than the SAT, honestly. It wasn't any more difficult, and I'd had four more years of education. Greg |

Just to add a contrarian point to many people's experience. I studied a lot for this exam. A lot as in 20 mins every day for months. Comparing to my SAT's and practice exams, it probably made a ~60 point difference in verbal, ~100 point in math and ~200 point difference in analytical. To me, that was a pretty big difference. That said, I am not sure it influenced my admissions all that much. I also scored in the 35th percentile in my Chem GRE, and still got in everywhere I applied in Chem. |

I found the analytical sections very easy. Honestly after understanding the types of questions on the verbel section and watching you time, im not sure any prep work makes a difference. If you dont know a word (very very possible) there isnt alot you can do to resolve that. |

It's very similar to the old SAT, with the english section being harder and math being the same. I liked WordSmart by the Princeton Review a lot, learned a ton of words from it; Other PR review books helped in working out multiple choice strategies. Take a practice test and see if you're happy with your score. For science/math majors, the verbal doesnt matter to much. Also, the verbal 99%ile ranges from 680 to 800. The quant 800/800 is only a 92%ile. PVJ |
