I remember meeting "e" in high school. I thought, "WTF? What a weird thing to make into a constant." It showed up again in Calc I, but again I didn't clue in as to how important it was. It still seemed artificial or contrived. Now, I'm finally clueing in to how weird this number is, and how important. I've read about the history of pi and the history of infinity, and enjoyed both. Does anyone here know about a book on "e", it's history and meanings? I tried a couple Amazon searches, but "mathematics" and/or "e" give too many results. |
