Thomas and Senior Judge Donald Lay, ruled against the parents who argued that the consent they gave was not fairly informed. But the court's opinion went farther than just granting public schools permission to expose elementary school-age children to sexually explicit materials without their parents' knowledge or informed consent. "We also hold," Reinhardt wrote, "that parents have no due process or privacy right to override the determinations of public schools as to the information to which their children will be exposed while enrolled as students." |

Comments?LOL -- we practically ended up writing a book on homeschooling, alt ed., etc. in this thread. It highlighted for me just how incredibly desperate and flimsy the defense of establishment ed is. Cajones, I respect your opinion a lot, however, even if a gov't school is "great," from where I see it, they can't possibly be "great" enough to be trusted with the power to override parental authority. Or, at least, that's how I'd feel about MY authority over my kid vs the school's authority over him or her if I were a parent. |

If I have kids I'm either doing home school or Montessori. Then when I can, send them back East to Choate or Phillips Academy (end of fucking story). |

it is actually harder to get into Harvard-Yale-Princeton from Andover/Exeter, because the quality of the students is so high, and both prep schools now limit the # of people who can even apply to HYP. If you want your kid to go to HYP send him to some piece of shit school in the middle of nowhere!That's a good point. Often one gets a lower class rank at an elite prep school than one gets at more "average" school and this can hurt applications into selective colleges--IF (and that's a big "IF") one is heart-set on a name-brand college. BTW, I'd be wary of Phillip's Exeter. There was a scandal there a while back about widespread sexual assault among their in-residence students. cajones: C'mon man, I don't "flame" people--you know that! :) Anyhow I don't take exception to HOW you make your point because you're making an argument based on ease and, I gather, resources and practicality. Obviously when property taxes subsidize the gov't schools, that sort of argument comes into play (afterall, it's not like going private school or homeschool can get you out of school/property taxes). Your situation is one common to young professional, two-income(?) households where kids, student loans, mortgage expenses, time contstraints, etc. limit a lot of what you can do. If, however, you were making tired old teacher union talking point arguments about socialization, academic quality, etc., then I might get a little smart-assed with you like I did when replying to Dr. ASDF's arguments that he was reading out of his Big Book of All Things. |

Well, I will admit that I'm disappointed you'd make that choice when you have alternatives available. Since you followed that other thread already, I'll spare you rehashing my condemnation of the ed. establishment and just wish your kid well with it. |
