This is news to me! ;)

When the HIT Squad was formed there were 5 owners (Hughes, Lawler, Fiore, myself, and the guy who put up the money). The four of us were all given various percentages of the gym with no financial risk for being a part of the gym.

When we formed the gym, we agreed that none of us could sell off our share of the gym without contacting the other owners to give them the opportunity to match the offer. I haven't chatted with Rob yet, but I know myself and Matt have yet to sell anything nor have we been contacted about selling our percentages. I do know that Matt has been contacted by the fifth owner in regards to Jesse Finney leasing space at our location.

In regards to Hughes and Fiore's personal fallout, I dont know anything about that. They have a long history as old college buddies, (Fiore never trained Hughes or Rob for a fight. Fiore was a good person to have around for levity, which is why we agreed to bring him on TUF with us.).

I personally have not trained HIT Squad fighers for the last couple years. I have been with Jeremy Horn's Elite performance this entire time, training Rob, Hughes, Horn, Johnson, etc., occassionally still working with Fisher and Mcfedries (depending on our schedules). I didnt want to call attention to our fallout in the past cause I didnt want to hurt the potential of the gym (and my potential profit). I have continued to train Hughes and Lawler over the last couple of years in the QC, Salt Lake City, or Arizona (occasionally appearing at the HIT SQUAD). Part of the reason why Fiore has been absent from our corner for a couple years.

Not sure if this made things more confusing or cleared things up. I can tell you that the other story being reported is clearly incomplete.

Best Wishes,

Matt Pena

Thank you very much fellas! We've been training fighters in my family for a couple generations. Before the UFC and HIT Squad, and I will continue to do so. I love it. Its in my blood, and I believe its what I'm suppose to do with my life (outside of the positive contributor to society, and taking care of my family of course).

I have Damarques Johnson taking on a very tough Amir Sadollah (no disrespect if I mispelled that), next week in Seattle. The gym at Elite Performance is amazing. They have a lot of young talent earning their stripes, and soon I will be calling the UFC on their behalf. I take pride in my ability to train homegrown fighters, and not needing to be a part of a supergym. I've been there and done that with MFS. Those types of gyms (that attract fighters already doing well), are very difficult to maintain for various reasons, which I'm sure the new current powerhouse gyms are starting to see.

Thanks again for the well wishes, believe me... It means a lot and is a good momentum to take to the gym.

Take Care!

Matt

I wonder what's up with the Finney stuff?

I thought he had a setup already in Crestwood?

looks like the source saying Hughes has sold HIT Squad is mmarecap.com. Writer named Brent Todd. He claims the gym has been sold to Jesse Finney and Marc Fiore will be staying on board but everyone else is gone.

Yes I am the originating story.  I will come right out and say that my sources are good and I would go to bat for each and every one of them.  With that said, I have pm'd Matt and asked for more details from his end and will run an updated and/or correction piece once I get the details from him.  Honestly I never expected this kind of reaction to the story (both the good and the bad) as I thought it would just be more like a footnote in the history of mma.  If anyone has any questions for me, feel free to pm me or email me directly brent@mmarecap.com.

I'm not sure who Brent is, and I have never heard of MMA Recap. As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing else to be said that hasnt been said in my initial post.

With so many new MMA websites going up over the last few years, I wouldnt believe anything I read unless I see direct quotes from the parties involved.

I can only speak for myself when I say this, but there are no hurt feelings here. Best wishes to Brent and his website.

i don't think anyone has ever heard of MMA Recap. I looked the site and stats up. lol

And this doesn't surprise me coming from a site like that. Glad the real info came out. Shame it had to come out this way. Sucks that these micro sites try to build a name by breaking half assed, unsourced news.

Hey everyone. I train at the Hitsquad gym and can tell you ALOT is going on right now! Finney has been in and out of the gym for days. He has brought in alot of new things like a cage, pads and a few new staff. They are very friendly and helpful!

I can shed a little light on this matter. The gym, while having great fighters training there and associated with it, was not run like a business. It catered primarily to the mma crowd, and we all know that that is not the best demographic to keep a gym afloat. Finney came in to turn the business around. He has proven experience, and a lot of connections/resources. Finney is currently the full owner, and he has already made several positive changes, and this is only the beginning. Look for the Hit Squad to become a powerhouse over the next few years, now that the right pieces of the puzzle are in place.

As far as Marc Fiore goes, contrary to what some people on here have implied, he is the glue that holds the gym together. For the past three years he has driven to the gym two hours every day, spent countless hours on the phone and computer managing most of the gym's fighters, and runs multiple classes throughout the day that mold our fighters. In the short period of time the gym has been open, he has gotten multiple fighters in the UFC, Strikeforce, and several other established organizations. In addition, you won't find someone who cares more about their students. The gym definitely would fall apart without him.

Just thought I would highlight these things, since it seemed that there was some debate. Now, watch Brian Foster and I tear it up at UFC 129.

This is the best thing for MMA in St. Louis. They are going to be top 2 or 3 in the world within 6 months.
