Never did I imagine that so many people would get their panties in a bunch about the use of the word "cunty" to describe a female blogger, but in this "gotcha" era of online "journalism" we find ourselves in any controversy that can be exploited to fill headlines and pad mandatory blog obligations will be pursued to the extreme.

My use of the word “cunty” in retrospect was unfortunate, and more of a symptom of my stand up comic vernacular than what more verbally conservative people would interpret the word as.  “Cunty” is just another word for bitchy.
It means exactly the same thing to me, it’s just that “cunty” sounds better and is more fun to use.

The term “bitchy” to describe the style of the writer in question and her take on things is both accurate and appropriate.
Here’s an example of one of her “articles” about me and Mike Goldberg that reads more like a forum post written by a nit picky attention whore borrowing his mom’s laptop than someone that calls themselves a professional “journalist” employed by a reputable site like Yahoo.

http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/mma/blog/cagewriter/post/The-best-of-Rogan-and-Goldberg-where-Rogan-goes?urn=mma-202602

Here’s another “article” where she makes fun of Stephen Quadros’ appearance.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/blog/cagewriter/post/Why-is-a-good-make-up-artist-important-Ask-Step?urn=mma-210138

These are just a few of the entries from her that have annoyed me over the years.  I could look for more, but I think you get the point.

Is that journalism?  Is that good writing?  Is that the kind of thing you could stumble upon while reading the New York Times?  Would it make a fine entry in FIGHT magazine?  Is sports illustrated pissed off that they missed out on publishing these gems?  No, it’s bitchy bullshit.  "Cunty" writing, if you will.

The sport of Mixed Martial Arts is fairly new, and one of the very first sports to be supported and defined by new media.  We have an extraordinary amount of websites dedicated to the sport, and in the dark days of being exiled from cable television these sites (including the one I’m posting this on, mixedmartialarts.com) helped keep this sport alive.
Now that the sport is incredibly popular and thriving however, we’ve reached this saturation point where anyone with a website that writes about this sport wants to be considered a “journalist.”  People that 20 years ago wouldn’t have a shot in hell at a career in writing are now demanding to be taken seriously with their snarky, poorly thought out offerings.

This sport is infested with these people, and what they’re going to have to realize is that if they want to be writers and they want their stuff to be read and ingested than they themselves must become public figures in the process, and that includes being shit on for what you put out there.  The illusion of anonymity and a lack of repercussions available to the subjects of your work is a thing of the past.
Writers should expect to be openly critiqued and criticized online by anyone any everyone, because guess what – those people writing forum posts shitting on your work are just as much a legit “journalist” as any of these website people.

My apologies to Maggie Hendricks for calling her “cunty,” and I truly hope I didn’t hurt her feelings.  My forum post was honest and off the cuff, and I didn’t think out the possible reactions to it.  I don’t know the woman, and I’m sure she’s probably a nice person in real life, but if I have a point with any of this it’s that when you put negative shit out there in the form of bitchy blog posts, that shit is going to come right back at you, and you better not be surprised.

This is the forum post that I was responding to and agreeing to where one of our fine forum brethren "TheSkywalker" made a very accurate and astute summary of the situation that I replied to with #BOOM and then later on with my more questionable response.

TheSkywalker - OK Maggie, time for you to get the talking to that you have coming, now that I can write more than one text message worth of response. And since you've complained so much about people not reading your entire article, I expect you to read every word of this. Let's start from the top.

Maggie Hendricks - If it were me, I don't know if I could do the same. Most of the times that I've met and interviewed Jackson, he's been fine. He hasn't been a joy to interview, but he hasn't been rude and certainly hasn't assaulted me.

What's different? My interviews are rarely on video. I prefer to write my stories, so Jackson doesn't have quite the stage as he does on when interviewed with a video camera. Jackson's worst actions -- assaulting Bryant, grabbing a Cage Potato reporter, threatening MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani and hitting Cagewriter's own Steve Cofield in the crotch -- happen when he's on camera.

First of all, Rampage didn't assault anyone. You are hyperbolizing because without hyperbole, your story has no teeth. Zero. John Joe said it in the very first response to this thread and he was dead on.

Did it ever dawn on you that the reason he hasn't been colorful with you is that he knows you won't be receptive to it? People give off vibes and their attitudes can be read. Rampage might not be a nobel laureate, but he obviously has very high level social skills and knows when those types of jokes will be well received, or at the very least accepted. Karyn didn't just laugh it off, look at her face in the interview, and if you're not an aspie you'll be able to tell that she genuinely found it hilarious. Helwani has a record of being self-depricating, and in all likelihood set up this ongoing feud with Rampage and his management. He's the biggest reporter in MMA and Rampage jokes about not knowing who he is. He continues to use the "squash" joke. Come on now.

Maggie Hendricks - His act is tired and old, yet we continue to interview the man and give him the publicity he needs to further his career, and that's where MMA media is making the mistake. He thinks it's funny to assault the people who cover his fights, who write about his movie, who give him a stage to show off the "Rampage" persona.

This is where you start to go astray and show your true colors. The act is not old and tired to the general public. The MMA audience is becoming more and more mainstream, and his sense of humor fits pop culture perfectly. The act is only old and tired to you because you seem not to like the colorful flirtatious nature of his character in the first place.

And again, he isn't assaulting anyone, he's staying within the lines and giving them great material so they can get more hits, more ad clicks, and make more money.

Maggie Hendricks -
Let's stop doing that. Take away his stage. Don't ask him questions in press conferences, don't cover his every move, don't give him another chance to assault reporters. He may think his act is funny and cute, but there is one way to ensure that no one else finds it funny or cute. Don't cover it.

Aaaaand this is where you finally get to your point. You try to empower yourself by implying that you have the power to take his stage away, when you know damn well that the fans couldn't care less about who is holding the microphone. You're not giving him a stage, he's giving you a job. If you don't like it, I'm sure that there are lots of other news outlets that would love (lol) to have your CV on file.

And by the way, pretty much everyone else finds his act funny and cute. Thats why he's SO INCREDIBLY POPULAR, and why his interviews get SO MANY HITS.

So, now on to your responses.

Maggie Hendricks - I am also not shocked that people who don't like my writing resort to making fun of my looks. I'm not a supermodel, which has exactly nothing to do with how I cover MMA.

Resort? No, it's an additive thing. The reason we are making fun of your looks is that it is obvious that your attitude about gender relations is the result of an emotional reaction to how you have been treated, not an objective rational thought process. Nobody "expects" you to be a supermodel, because you're a reporter. That's something you have invented in your own mind, and looking back over your history, it's perfectly obvious that this is nothing new. Karyn is obviously no supermodel either, and that is a large part of why Rampages joke was SO FUNNY.

Maggie Hendricks - If you don't agree with me that Rampage was over the line, that's your right. I write the stories. I can't control how they're perceived, but I appreciate that you do read them in their entirety before commenting.

You might not be able to CONTROL how they are perceived, but you can control the tone of your own writing. And thus far, you have come off like a sandy-crotched whiney teenager who just got done reading Atlas Shrugged for the first time.

You keep saying (or at least implying) that people didn't read all 270 words of your brilliant article, but that's a total cop out because you know damn well that everyone did. It's 270 words. It's hardly an article, hell, I've read abstracts that were longer. My response is longer. But then again, my thoughts are obviously more complex than yours and require more words to express them.

In conclusion:
Chongo713 - None of the semantics even matter in this case, because like so many others, Maggie sees an opportunity to make a name for herself in mma. She's completely irrelevant Just ignore her!

You're giving these fucks traction.

You say yourself, and I believe its true, you are a self-made man and can afford to speak plainly and your mind. Well be that, don't start politicking it up.

Nah, EVERYBODY has to be responsible, if you talk shit and have to retract then so be it - this era of 'you gotta hear whatever I say because it's my truth' is bullshit. Sometimes your absolute honesty is best kept absolutely to yourself. Right-wing talk show hosts have people convinced that everybody needs to hear some bullshit because you thought it, not true.

That said, she got what she asked for, the boomerang hit the bitch in the head.
