Just to be clear, I'm NOT Stun Gun's interpreter. Our team (KTT) is close with Team MAD, so we just went out of concern for Dong Hyun, but I figured people would want to know... Phone Post

Another Foob -
Dedicated1 - I occasionally get severe spasms in my calves and it's fucking excruciating. it only happens when i'm asleep though after really wrecking my legs during the day overdoing a workout or cardio. worst pain i've ever imagined. can't imagine that happening in other muscles. always wakes me up screaming, and takes hours for relief/muscle relaxation.

I believe more potassium when you rehydrate post-workout will help with that.

Exactly

We're at dinner with Stun Gun right now and he said that it might have happened while he was throwing those elbows at the beginning. Phone Post

Bummer. What a crappy way to lose, but I'm glad it's not serious. Take care and come back soon Stun Gun!

Lame way to lose, but if you've ever had a severe muscle spasm, they are debilitating. Bummer.

I get them in several different places, calves included. The ribs and hamstring area are the most painful by far. Id probably say that the hamstring is even worse than the ribs too. The pain is ridiculously insane. I don't know why it happens when Im sleeping, but thats when it always seems to kick in on me as well. The pain is so severe that I couldn't imagine it happening in the middle of a fight. There's no possible way you could continue. Sucks for stun gun. Hopefully he will get a rematch.

Hey, I had this when I was a growing teenager. I can't remember having it after I passed about 18, perhaps a few years younger.

Muscle spasm? Not rib? Hunh. Felt terrible for this guy, I know he wanted to do so much more that night.

The hamstring cramp happened to Anthony Macias in a fight a long time ago IIRC. His leg froze right up after an exchange and he went down seemingly for no reason.

Did Stun Gun shout "stop" to Maia or something? It was weird how fast Demian realized Stun Gun was hurt and stopped hitting him. Class act.

Yes its odd for a cramp/spasm to occur after a athlete is warmed up but it happens in every professional sport, athletes cramp up all the time. The problem obviously here is there's no timeouts.

The list of reasons will vary from person to person; but just because we don't see guys tap or lose from it as quick as Stun Guns unfortunate loss, it doesn't mean it hasn't happened to many fighters causing them to lose.

I feel confident saying anyone who's trained at a fairly high level (for whatever sport) has at some point experienced something similar.

As for those who experience it in their sleep, others have mentioned this but most times that can be attributed to your post workout recovery. Find out what you're missing and fixing it should prevent these horrible night cramps, it did for me.

You should also look into multiple sclerosis.  My grandpa died of MS and one of the very first symptoms he got was debilitating leg contorting cramps.  They would always start on the front of his leg with an epicenter near his knee cap (When he was pressing/massaging on his leg, this was always the most sore spot, so he called it the epicenter).  When this happened his whole muscle would spasm and lock up, which would cause his foot to go off to an odd angle -- toes straight back and top of the foot going towards the calf.  These cramps wouldn't stop from any of the treatments we tried. His only option was to wait it out until the muscle finally relaxed which in some cases lasted over a day long.
