Haole - If Strikeforce was dissolved or their contract with Showtime expired & they attempted to block a fighter from fighting for zuffa that would never stand up in court

 ^ This

It almost sounds like Zuffa signed a non-compete clause in regards to those particular fighters, but non-compete clauses cannot be indefinite.  If the clause doesn't have a concrete endpoint, the liklihood of it holding up to a legal challenge is pretty damn slim.

This is correct. without a concrete endpoint there is no way a contract clause like this holds up in court. Its seems like a way of keeping top level sf talent from requesting ufc deals after big wins

RealTerry - Melendez would be better off going to Bellator once its on Spike. His fights would be seen by a lot more people .

Um, dude, Bellator is on Spike, and like 47 people watch it
Bellator is on MTV2 and SpikeTV.com Phone Post

I call BS Zuffa is not that stupid to sign away someone like Melendez. I think Meltzer it misunderstanding the contract. At best they signed a non compete clause for a couple years not life...

Maybe their contracts are with Showtime rather than Zuffa a la Fedor? Still doesn't make sense. UFC can/will hopefully buy out their contracts if Strikeforce folds. It somewhat clarifies why Zuffa is not really pushing the brand considering they seem at odds with each other.

Yup there's no way there's a law in Delaware called a mans law it means if you stop me from making a living then you have to pay for me to live ...

Might be two different livelihoods but I had to sign a contract at a tattoo studio and it said if I left I couldn't work anywheres within 50 miles to them well I quit and the closest shop also the furthest shops were within 20 miles so he tried to sue me and lost in court ... Phone Post

No it starts on Spike in January, on MTV2 now doing about 200k a show. That should go up quite a bit once they get on Spike in January

See, people dont even know what channel its on, lol

You are right though, season 70 was still on MTV2, but not close to 200K average

Well thatll change once they get on Spike which people still go to for MMA. That MMA uncensored show does legit ratings there which Bellator should be able to get. But they are going to need to bring in some draws too.

http://www.fightofthenight.com/news/bellator-70-tv-ratings/

The average rating on MTV2 look to be 160k or so. Once on spike they will be doing over 500k

That explains why Mousasi re-signed for 5 or 6 more fights, while being in a division where he has virtually no one to fight.
That's sad. Very sad.
Only bright side of the story is that most of the fighters tied up are still young, so we probably get to see them in the UFC someday.

Strikeforce is dead meat - owners would rather see it gone and top talent in the UFC, but top talent is tied up by a TV deal, even MMA media don't give a fuck about it now.

It's so bad that you've got probably next MW contender begging on his knees for a bonus.
What a clusterfuck.

LOL at people believing this bullshit.

This is clearly as long as SF is on showtime these guys cant come to the UFC, they cant be picked up by the UFC and I guess even if they have a contract that expires they couldnt sign with the UFC for as long as SF is on showtime.

LOL thinking Zuffa would sign away guys like Gilbert, Ronda etc for life, give me a break.

Trust me.

It won't be a big deal that Rousey is stuck after Cyborg beats the hype out of her.

The UFC won't have any interest in her just like Gina fell off.

It'll be time to wait for the next marketable girl who fights but looks good enough to sell to Joe Sixpack as "hot". Phone Post

You guys need to look back on pro wrestling.

Lot of guys had WCW contracts that rolled over to Time Warner.

If they signed with WWE it would have meant WWE buying that contract PLUS the wrestler NOT getting the money.

Guys like Tank Abbott got paid until 2007 from a deal that was signed in 2000 once WCW closed in 2001.

6 years these guys got paid to do nothing but they couldn't go to WWE.

I'm sure Showtime pulled a similar deal where if they cease MMA it would cause Zuffa to buy Rockhold or Gil and that price won't be worth it. Phone Post

Its only as long as zuffa/Showtime have a deal.

Here is the updated article.
This is what Meltzer said.

I said as long as Zuffa and Showtime have a deal, they can't fight on a UFC show unless Showtime gives the okay. It's in the Zuffa/Showtime contract. (Ed. note: actually, he said "as long as Showtime broadcasts MMA." but that's unimportant)

...

I was told by one of the fighters who got it straight from Stephen Espinosa that certain guys are Showtime fighters as long as the Zuffa/Showtime contract is in effect. The fighter was a main guy on a list agreed to be Showtime and Zuffa when the new deal went down and the agreement was all fighters on the list are Showtime fighters as long as they are under contract to Zuffa and as long as Showtime airs Strikeforce.

Zuffa and Showtime can sign a new contract that changes the stips between Zuffa and Showtime now or when this deal expires, but he was told he can't transfer to UFC as long as the current deal is in place and could not fight on a UFC card unless Showtime gives the okay.

The fighter was told by Espinosa that in specifics because they insisted on the deal after what happened with Dan Henderson where his Strikeforce contract expired and they signed him to a new deal but brought him to UFC at a time when nobody knew the future of Strikeforce. This stip was insisted on by Showtime so something like that couldn't happen with their however many exclusive stars.

 I asked DW:

"Meltzer is claiming you guys signed an agreement with Showtime that states Zuffa/UFC  cannot have (specifically mentioned) Ronda, Luke or Gil on your roster as long as Showtime promotes MMA, even beyond their contract period w/Strikeforce). He also said that even if Strikeforce folds, those 3 still cannot come to the UFC (but they can go to Belator or another competitor- just never UFC as long as Showtime promotes MMA). Is this true?"

DW's response:

"idk wtf melzers problem is! Has this guy lost his mind? That is absolutely not true!"
